BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Computers with Internet access have succeeded in facilitating human communication. The telephone system, which was developed some years ago as the primary communication system, has advanced significantly, to the point where we now have fixed wireless phones, mobile phones, and other similar devices. With the fast growth of mobile phones, numerous services, such as Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), have been widely available and contribute to the use of mobile phones. SMS, in particular, is widely used in communication and has lately been leveraged to provide a variety of services such as airline ticketing, financial services, and commercial services such as share and sell, which allows users to easily share and/or sell airtime. SMS is a mobile technology that allows you to send and receive text or binary messages from and from your phone. Because SMS is very simple to use, a user may quickly learn how to send SMS. Each month, more than 160 billion SMSs are sent and received in European countries. According to Pramsane and Sanjaya (2016), 48.7 billion SMS messages were delivered in the second half of 2005, a 50% increase from the previous six months. The main advantage of SMS is its low cost and widespread availability, as almost everyone owns a phone.
Several service providers provide mobile SMS services in various regions of the world. The cost of sending an SMS is often low, and most carriers do not charge for receiving SMS. Sometimes service providers provide a specific number of free SMS messages each month, allowing clients to send and receive an infinite number of SMS messages. It is possible to obtain a customized dedicated line that charges a bespoke rate for messages sent to the number; it is also possible to have a number designated as toll free, allowing customers to send SMS to the number for free. All of this contributes to SMS being a very cost efficient method of conveying information.
Even today, especially in poor nations like Nigeria, students swarm to notice boards in anxiousness, despite the fact that most institutions, even those in less developed countries, now make examination results available on their websites. In less developed nations, Internet access is still limited and rather expensive. Even in affluent nations, where most homes have Internet connection, SMS provides a faster and less expensive way of communicating test results and other information. According to Pramsane and Sanjaya (2016), colleges might use SMS to deliver educational services such as grade release, enrollment information, university announcements, and internship opportunities. SMS has the benefit of allowing pupils to obtain crucial information on the go without having to seek it.
The result checking system not only allows students to request grades, but it also delivers them as soon as they are available. This is accomplished by either pushing the result to the students (by text message) or working on a request given by a student to create the result (pulling). The PUSH and PULL SMS techniques are the most often utilized in apps. This program may be used to either push or pull messages.
A Push SMS application sends a message from the program to the user. It's a one-way street. In other words, a message is initiated by the mobile application (in this example, the SMS result checking application). As an example, consider a school that instantly distributes exam results to students and their parents/sponsors as soon as they are available. Users do not seek grades, take no action, and are not paid for getting SMS. The SMS would be delivered to them in a couple of seconds, regardless of where they are, as long as their mobile phone is inside the service area of their network operator (Desi,2018).
In contrast, a Pull SMS application is one in which a user submits a request and receives a response from the application. This is an entirely duplex circumstance. As an example, suppose a student demands his or her marks for a just completed semester. The suggested system includes PULL and PUSH features, making it even more efficient and user-friendly for speculative and worried kids.
