Background of the Study
Gender dynamics in local council elections play a significant role in shaping the political landscape and determining the participation and success of male and female candidates (Bello & Haruna, 2023). In Jega Local Government Area, Kebbi State, gender dynamics often favor male candidates due to deeply entrenched cultural norms and expectations that limit women’s political engagement (Sani & Zubairu, 2024). The study of gender dynamics within these elections is crucial for understanding the systemic barriers that hinder women’s political participation and the factors that influence their electoral success (Aliyu & Musa, 2025). This research aims to investigate the gender-based challenges and opportunities that affect female candidates during local council elections in Jega, shedding light on the broader implications for women’s political representation in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing number of female candidates in local council elections in Jega, women continue to face significant gender-related barriers that affect their chances of success (Mohammed & Usman, 2023). These barriers include societal biases, limited financial resources, and cultural expectations that restrict women’s political involvement (Zubairu & Ali, 2025). This study seeks to explore how gender dynamics influence the outcomes of local council elections in Jega and to identify strategies that can be used to improve women’s electoral success.
