Background of the Study
Voter perception plays a critical role in determining the success of political candidates, and this is particularly true for female candidates who may face additional challenges in gaining voter trust and support (Abubakar & Lawan, 2025). In Biu Local Government Area, Borno State, the perception of female candidates is influenced by several factors, including cultural norms, religious beliefs, and societal expectations surrounding gender roles (Ahmed & Muktar, 2023). Female candidates often face greater scrutiny and skepticism compared to their male counterparts, with voters sometimes questioning their ability to lead effectively or their fitness for political office (Sani & Bello, 2024). Despite these challenges, increasing numbers of women in Biu are entering the political arena, and it is essential to understand how voters perceive these candidates and what factors influence their support (Ali & Tukur, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate voter perception of female political candidates in Biu, exploring the factors that contribute to or hinder their electoral success.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The underrepresentation of women in political offices in Biu Local Government Area is compounded by the negative perceptions of female candidates among voters. Despite the growing presence of women in politics, societal biases and stereotypes about women’s leadership abilities continue to limit their electoral success (Ibrahim & Zubairu, 2023). This study aims to investigate the perceptions of voters in Biu regarding female candidates, examining how these perceptions affect the outcomes of elections and women’s political participation in the region.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that shape voter perceptions of female candidates in Biu Local Government Area. By identifying the specific cultural, social, and political barriers that influence voters’ attitudes, the study can help inform strategies to improve the electoral prospects of female candidates in the region. The findings will be useful for women in politics, gender equality advocates, and policymakers working to promote women’s participation in politics.
