Background of the Study
Women in political leadership positions face unique challenges that often stem from societal, cultural, and structural barriers. In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, female political leaders navigate a complex environment characterized by traditional gender norms, limited political support, and patriarchal attitudes that undermine their leadership potential (Zubairu & Bello, 2023). Despite the increasing number of women holding leadership roles in local government, women in Gombe continue to experience significant hurdles that affect their ability to lead effectively (Musa & Abubakar, 2024). These challenges include cultural expectations that women should prioritize family over public service, limited access to political resources, and a lack of mentorship opportunities within political circles. Additionally, women often face discrimination in political party structures and are sometimes relegated to positions with less decision-making power (Sulaiman & Tukur, 2025). The challenges faced by women in political leadership in Gombe are not unique to the region, but the combination of local cultural dynamics and political structures creates a particularly difficult environment for female politicians. This study aims to appraise the challenges faced by women in political leadership positions in Gombe Local Government Area, highlighting the barriers that hinder their effective participation in local governance and proposing ways to overcome these challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognition of the importance of female participation in political leadership, women in Gombe Local Government Area face numerous challenges that impede their ability to succeed in leadership roles. These challenges range from gender bias and cultural stereotypes to limited access to financial and political resources (Ibrahim & Usman, 2023). Women in leadership positions often struggle to balance family responsibilities with their political careers, which affects their effectiveness in office. Furthermore, political structures in Gombe tend to be male-dominated, leaving little room for women to exercise their leadership potential. This research seeks to investigate the various challenges faced by women in political leadership positions in Gombe Local Government Area and explore how these challenges affect their ability to lead and make meaningful contributions to local governance.

The findings of this research will contribute to the discourse on women’s political empowerment and gender equality, offering evidence-based recommendations for addressing the barriers that limit women’s political participation. This study will be beneficial to political parties, policymakers, and gender advocates working to promote the inclusion of women in leadership positions, providing them with a clearer understanding of the obstacles women face and how they can be overcome.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Gombe Local Government Area and will examine the challenges faced by women in political leadership positions at the local government level. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing sensitive information about the experiences of female leaders due to the societal taboos surrounding women in politics. Additionally, the study will primarily focus on qualitative data collected through interviews and surveys, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
