BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In secondary schools, reward and punishment are viewed as extremely vital methods for a teacher to maintain class order. Many educationists and psychologists have voiced varying opinions on the efficient use of incentive and punishment in secondary schools. According Gitomer(2016), the concerns of reward and punishment are frequently addressed in secondary schools nowadays, particularly when they are tied to the learning process. It is also an issue of interest for many teachers and parents who believe that the education authority must establish its boundaries. Some researchers like Palincsar, (2017) and  Taylor (2015)  have stated in their books that students should have virtually entire independence in the learning process at school. A timely and acceptable answer must be found on this subject since the outcome will provide practical counsel and direction to those just starting out in the teaching profession or to parents who are concerned about their children's progress in life. This study effort, however, does not pretend to answer all of the difficulties associated with punishment and incentives in the learning process in schools, but rather to highlight specific ideas that will be of tremendous educational benefit to both parents and the broader public.
