Background of the Study
Psychiatric nursing is a specialized field that focuses on the care of individuals with mental health disorders, promoting recovery and improving quality of life. Despite its importance, psychiatric nursing often faces stigma and is considered a less attractive career choice compared to other nursing specialties. This perception may be due to the societal stigma surrounding mental health issues, misconceptions about psychiatric nursing, and the challenges associated with working in mental health settings.
At Abia State University Teaching Hospital, nursing students are exposed to psychiatric nursing through their clinical rotations and coursework. However, their attitudes towards psychiatric nursing as a career may be shaped by several factors, including personal beliefs, cultural influences, and exposure to psychiatric care. Studies have shown that students' attitudes towards psychiatric nursing can influence their willingness to choose it as a career and their readiness to provide quality care to individuals with mental health conditions (Ng & Ho, 2024).
Understanding students' attitudes towards psychiatric nursing is crucial for addressing the workforce shortage in mental health services. By identifying factors that influence students' perceptions of psychiatric nursing, educational institutions and healthcare organizations can develop strategies to encourage more students to consider this vital field of nursing. Positive attitudes towards psychiatric nursing can help reduce the stigma associated with mental health and improve the quality of care for individuals with mental health disorders.
This study aims to investigate students' attitudes towards psychiatric nursing as a career at Abia State University Teaching Hospital and identify factors influencing these attitudes.
Statement of the Problem
Psychiatric nursing faces significant challenges, including negative attitudes towards mental health care and a shortage of qualified professionals in the field. In Nigeria, as in many other parts of the world, psychiatric nursing is often not viewed as a prestigious or desirable career. Nursing students at Abia State University Teaching Hospital, like many others, may perceive psychiatric nursing as a less attractive career choice due to the stigma surrounding mental health and the emotional demands of the profession.
There is limited research on nursing students' attitudes towards psychiatric nursing in Nigeria, particularly within the context of Abia State University Teaching Hospital. Understanding students' perceptions of psychiatric nursing is essential for addressing the negative stereotypes and encouraging more nursing students to pursue this important specialty. This study seeks to explore the attitudes of nursing students towards psychiatric nursing and identify the factors that shape their perceptions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the attitudes of nursing students towards psychiatric nursing as a career at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify factors that influence nursing students' perceptions of psychiatric nursing.
3. To explore strategies that could be used to improve students’ attitudes and increase interest in psychiatric nursing.
Research Questions
1. What are the attitudes of nursing students towards psychiatric nursing as a career at Abia State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What factors influence nursing students’ perceptions of psychiatric nursing?
3. How can students’ attitudes towards psychiatric nursing be improved to encourage more interest in the field?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students with more exposure to psychiatric nursing are more likely to have positive attitudes towards it as a career.
2. Negative societal perceptions of mental health are negatively correlated with nursing students' attitudes towards psychiatric nursing.
3. Nursing students who receive more education on psychiatric nursing are more likely to pursue it as a career.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Abia State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and the challenge of generalizing findings to nursing students at other institutions.
