Background of the Study
Education is an essential tool for personal and societal development, and it is especially critical in the healthcare field. However, financial constraints often limit access to quality education, especially for nursing students in Nigeria. Access to resources such as textbooks, clinical training opportunities, and even basic school fees can become barriers to students' ability to perform well academically and complete their courses. In Ondo State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, the cost of higher education has risen, exacerbating financial challenges faced by nursing students, particularly those from low-income families. These financial barriers can affect students' academic success, motivation, and overall educational experience (Adedayo et al., 2023).
The nursing profession requires both theoretical and practical education, with students needing access to clinical placements, lab materials, and updated learning resources. However, students facing financial hardships may struggle to obtain these essential resources, hindering their ability to perform well in both theoretical and practical courses (Okafor et al., 2024). Research has demonstrated that financial constraints can lead to increased dropout rates, decreased academic performance, and limited career prospects for students (Ibrahim et al., 2023). This study aims to explore how financial constraints affect nursing students’ access to quality education in Ondo State and how these constraints impact their academic performance and career aspirations.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of education in shaping the nursing profession, many nursing students in Ondo State face significant financial constraints that hinder their access to quality education. These financial challenges affect various aspects of their educational experience, from securing necessary materials and equipment to paying for tuition and clinical placements. Understanding the specific impact of financial constraints on nursing students’ education in this region will help in formulating interventions and policies that can improve educational outcomes for these students.
