Background of the Study
Interprofessional education (IPE) refers to the process of students from different healthcare professions learning together to foster collaboration and improve patient outcomes. In the context of nursing education, IPE is crucial as it prepares students for real-world healthcare settings, where teamwork and interprofessional collaboration are essential. Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, one of the leading teaching hospitals in Nigeria, serves as a training ground for nursing students and other healthcare professionals. The integration of IPE into nursing curricula at this institution is vital for equipping students with the skills needed to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
The importance of IPE in nursing education has been recognized globally, as it enhances communication, mutual respect, and collaborative decision-making among healthcare professionals. By learning together with students from other disciplines, nursing students can develop a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare providers, which improves their ability to work collaboratively in patient care. Statement of the Problem
Although interprofessional education (IPE) has been shown to improve collaboration and patient care outcomes, its implementation in nursing curricula in Nigeria remains inconsistent. At Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, the integration of IPE into the nursing program is an emerging concept, but its impact on teamwork among nursing students has not been fully assessed. Nurses, as part of multidisciplinary teams, must be equipped with the skills to collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals to ensure quality care for patients.
The lack of empirical evidence on the influence of IPE in nursing curricula may hinder its widespread adoption and integration into nursing programs in Nigeria. Furthermore, without understanding its impact, nursing educators may not fully appreciate the value of IPE in preparing students for the complex realities of healthcare teams. Therefore, this study will assess how IPE is implemented in the nursing curriculum at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and its influence on teamwork skills among nursing students.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the integration of interprofessional education in the nursing curriculum at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
2. To examine the impact of IPE on teamwork skills among nursing students.
3. To identify barriers to effective implementation of IPE in nursing curricula.
Research Questions
1. How is interprofessional education integrated into the nursing curriculum at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between interprofessional education and teamwork skills among nursing students at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
2. Nursing students exposed to IPE demonstrate better teamwork and communication skills than those not exposed to IPE.
3. There are barriers to the full integration of IPE into the nursing curriculum at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and examine the impact of IPE on their teamwork skills. Limitations include potential biases due to self-reported data and the challenge of generalizing findings to other healthcare institutions.
