Background of the Study

A cancer diagnosis can be a traumatic and life-altering event, often causing significant psychological distress for patients. The emotional impact of cancer diagnosis includes feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty about the future. Understanding the psychological effects of a cancer diagnosis is crucial for providing comprehensive care that addresses not only the physical aspects of cancer treatment but also the mental health needs of patients. This study will assess the psychological effects of cancer diagnosis on patients at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Cancer diagnosis often leads to severe emotional distress, which can hinder the patient’s coping abilities and overall well-being. However, despite the recognized psychological impact, there is often limited focus on mental health support within cancer care frameworks. This study aims to explore the psychological effects of cancer diagnosis, such as anxiety and depression, and highlight the need for integrated mental health support in cancer care at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the psychological effects of cancer diagnosis on patients, including anxiety, depression, and fear.
  2. To examine how these psychological effects influence patients' treatment adherence and overall well-being.
  3. To identify the need for mental health support services within cancer care at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What are the psychological effects experienced by cancer patients following their diagnosis?
  2. How do these psychological effects impact patients' treatment adherence and coping mechanisms?
  3. What role do mental health support services play in cancer care at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cancer diagnosis significantly increases the psychological distress of patients, including anxiety, depression, and fear.
  2. Psychological distress negatively impacts patients' adherence to treatment regimens and overall well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cancer patients diagnosed at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported emotional distress and difficulty in accessing the full spectrum of patients' psychological experiences.
