Background of the Study

Emergency nurses regularly encounter traumatic cases such as accidents, natural disasters, and violent injuries. The emotional and psychological toll of such incidents can affect nurses' mental health, job satisfaction, and performance. Effective coping mechanisms are essential for mitigating the stress caused by these traumatic cases. This study will assess the coping strategies used by emergency nurses at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital (KASUTH) when dealing with traumatic cases.

Statement of the Problem

Dealing with traumatic cases can result in emotional strain and burnout among emergency nurses. It is essential to understand the coping mechanisms nurses employ to manage the psychological challenges of working in high-stress environments. This study will explore how emergency nurses at KASUTH cope with the emotional impact of traumatic incidents.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the coping mechanisms used by emergency nurses at KASUTH to deal with traumatic cases.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these coping strategies in maintaining mental health and job performance.
  3. To identify factors that influence the selection and effectiveness of coping mechanisms among emergency nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What coping mechanisms are employed by emergency nurses at KASUTH to deal with traumatic cases?
  2. How effective are these coping strategies in managing the emotional impact of traumatic cases?
  3. What factors influence the coping mechanisms used by emergency nurses at KASUTH?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Coping mechanisms do not significantly impact the mental health and performance of emergency nurses at KASUTH.
  2. There are no significant factors influencing the coping strategies of emergency nurses in dealing with traumatic cases at KASUTH.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on emergency nurses working at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include the potential bias in self-reported coping mechanisms and the variability in nurses' exposure to traumatic cases.
