Background of the Study

Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) involve situations where the number of casualties exceeds the resources available to provide care. Emergency nurses play a crucial role in responding to such events by triaging patients, administering immediate care, and ensuring effective patient management. This study aims to investigate the competency of emergency nurses in handling MCIs at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Statement of the Problem

Handling MCIs requires a specific set of skills and preparedness to manage large numbers of patients in critical conditions. While emergency nurses are trained for such situations, the actual preparedness and competency in managing MCIs in the Nigerian context remain unclear. This study will assess the competency of emergency nurses in handling MCIs, focusing on their ability to provide efficient care under pressure.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the competency of emergency nurses in managing mass casualty incidents at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
  2. To evaluate the preparedness of emergency nurses in handling MCIs and their ability to effectively triage patients.
  3. To identify challenges faced by emergency nurses in handling MCIs and suggest improvements.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of competency of emergency nurses in handling mass casualty incidents at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe?
  2. How prepared are emergency nurses to effectively manage MCIs and triage patients?
  3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in handling MCIs at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses' competency does not significantly impact the efficiency of handling mass casualty incidents at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
  2. There are no significant challenges faced by emergency nurses in handling MCIs at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on emergency nurses at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, assessing their competency in handling mass casualty incidents. Limitations include the potential for limited exposure to MCIs and the difficulty in measuring real-time performance in crisis situations.

Definitions of Terms
