Background of the Study

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used in emergencies when a patient’s heartbeat or breathing stops. For CPR to be effective, it must be performed quickly and correctly, particularly by emergency nurses who are often the first responders in critical situations. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of CPR provided by emergency nurses in the accident and emergency unit at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.

Statement of the Problem

CPR is a critical intervention for patients experiencing cardiac arrest, but its effectiveness can be impacted by the skill and competency of those performing it. Emergency nurses play an essential role in CPR, yet there are concerns regarding the quality of CPR administered, particularly in high-stress situations. This study will examine the efficiency of CPR provided by emergency nurses in the accident and emergency unit at OAUTHC.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the competency of emergency nurses in performing CPR at OAUTHC.
  2. To evaluate the efficiency of CPR administered by emergency nurses in terms of survival rates and patient outcomes.
  3. To identify factors that influence the quality and effectiveness of CPR performed by emergency nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of competency of emergency nurses in performing CPR at OAUTHC?
  2. How efficient is CPR administered by emergency nurses in improving survival rates and patient outcomes?
  3. What factors influence the efficiency of CPR administered by emergency nurses at OAUTHC?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The competency of emergency nurses in performing CPR does not significantly impact the survival rates of patients in OAUTHC.
  2. There are no significant factors that influence the efficiency of CPR performed by emergency nurses at OAUTHC.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on emergency nurses in the accident and emergency units of OAUTHC and assess their CPR competency and the efficiency of the CPR administered. Limitations include the reliance on observational data and potential biases in assessing the quality of CPR.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A life-saving technique used to restore heartbeat and breathing in cases of cardiac arrest.
  • Emergency Nurses: Nurses working in the emergency department, primarily responsible for providing urgent and critical care.
  • Survival Rate: The percentage of patients who survive following a cardiac arrest after receiving CPR.
