Background of the Study

Economic hardship, often characterized by financial stress, unemployment, and poverty, is increasingly recognized as a major risk factor for the development and exacerbation of mental health disorders. Studies have shown that individuals facing economic struggles are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders (Kramer et al., 2023). In Nigeria, where poverty rates remain high, the connection between economic hardship and mental health problems is particularly pronounced.

The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State, provides psychiatric care to individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Given the significant economic challenges faced by many in the region, particularly in conflict-affected areas like Borno, this study seeks to investigate the relationship between economic hardship and mental health disorders, focusing on patients attending this hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Economic hardship is widely believed to have adverse effects on mental health, yet there is limited research on the specific relationship between financial struggles and mental health disorders in Nigeria. In Maiduguri, the prolonged economic stress caused by insurgency and poverty may exacerbate mental health conditions, making it critical to explore these connections in the local context. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how economic hardship contributes to the development of mental health disorders in patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the relationship between economic hardship and the prevalence of mental health disorders among patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri.
  2. To assess how financial stress impacts the severity and progression of mental health conditions in this population.
  3. To identify coping mechanisms employed by individuals facing economic hardship in managing their mental health.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between economic hardship and the prevalence of mental health disorders among patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri?
  2. How does financial stress affect the severity of mental health conditions in these patients?
  3. What coping strategies do individuals in economic hardship use to manage their mental health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between economic hardship and the prevalence of mental health disorders among patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri.
  2. Economic hardship has no significant impact on the severity of mental health disorders in this population.
  3. Coping strategies employed by individuals facing economic hardship do not significantly alleviate mental health issues.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on patients diagnosed with mental health disorders at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, and their experiences with economic hardship. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting economic status and mental health symptoms, as well as the challenge of isolating the effect of economic hardship from other social determinants of health.
