Background of the Study

The caregiving role of psychiatric nurses is both demanding and emotionally taxing, requiring them to address patients’ mental, emotional, and physical needs. Over time, this can lead to psychological stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout, affecting nurses' well-being and the quality of care they provide (Adewale & Okonkwo, 2023).

At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, psychiatric nurses are exposed to challenging work environments, including high patient-to-nurse ratios and the management of severe psychiatric cases. While their role is critical, the psychological toll of caregiving often goes unaddressed, impacting their mental health and job satisfaction (Olayemi et al., 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of psychiatric nurses in mental health care, their psychological well-being is often overlooked. At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, the demanding nature of caregiving, coupled with inadequate support systems, leaves many nurses vulnerable to psychological distress.

The lack of research and structured interventions to address the psychological impact of caregiving on psychiatric nurses limits the effectiveness of mental health services. This study examines the psychological toll of caregiving and proposes strategies to support nurses’ well-being.

1. To evaluate the psychological impact of caregiving on psychiatric nurses at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.

2. To identify factors contributing to psychological distress among psychiatric nurses.

3. To recommend interventions to enhance the psychological well-being of psychiatric nurses.
