Background of the Study
Psychiatric nurses often face high levels of occupational stress due to the nature of their work, which involves managing complex mental health cases, exposure to emotional distress, and physical threats from patients (Jones et al., 2024). The high-pressure environment in psychiatric settings can result in burnout, reduced job performance, and mental health issues among nurses (Kumar & Patel, 2023).
Stress management training (SMT) has been identified as an effective intervention for enhancing coping mechanisms among healthcare workers. By equipping psychiatric nurses with tools to manage stress, SMT can improve their resilience, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. At the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, addressing the stress levels of psychiatric nurses is critical to ensuring quality patient care and fostering a supportive work environment.
This study investigates the effect of SMT on psychiatric nurses’ coping strategies, contributing to evidence-based approaches for improving mental health outcomes in healthcare professionals.
Statement of the Problem
The demanding nature of psychiatric nursing often leaves nurses vulnerable to stress-related challenges that compromise their ability to provide optimal care. At the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, anecdotal reports suggest high levels of stress among psychiatric nurses, leading to burnout, absenteeism, and reduced job satisfaction.
Despite the potential benefits of SMT, there is limited empirical research on its effectiveness in enhancing coping strategies among psychiatric nurses in Nigerian hospitals. This gap hinders the implementation of targeted interventions aimed at reducing stress and improving professional well-being. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of SMT on psychiatric nurses' coping strategies, providing actionable insights for healthcare management.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the stress levels among psychiatric nurses at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate the effect of stress management training on psychiatric nurses’ coping strategies.
3. To identify barriers to implementing effective stress management programs for psychiatric nurses.
Research Questions
1. What are the current stress levels among psychiatric nurses at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital?
2. How does stress management training influence the coping strategies of psychiatric nurses?
3. What barriers exist in implementing stress management programs for psychiatric nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Psychiatric nurses at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital experience high levels of occupational stress.
2. Stress management training significantly improves coping strategies among psychiatric nurses.
3. Barriers to effective stress management programs negatively affect the coping strategies of psychiatric nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on psychiatric nurses employed at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital from 2023 to 2025. Data will be collected through surveys, stress level assessments, and evaluations of coping strategies before and after SMT sessions. Limitations include variations in individual stress responses and challenges in maintaining consistency across training sessions.
