Background of the Study
Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of drug abuse, which can lead to severe mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis (Olusola et al., 2023). The interplay between substance abuse and mental health is complex, with drug use often exacerbating existing psychiatric conditions or precipitating new ones (WHO, 2024).
In Maiduguri, Borno State, the socio-political instability and high unemployment rates have contributed to increased substance abuse among adolescents. The Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri is at the forefront of addressing the mental health crises linked to drug abuse. However, the impact of drug abuse on adolescents' mental health in this region remains under-researched.
This study seeks to explore the mental health consequences of drug abuse among adolescents in Maiduguri, providing evidence for targeted interventions to curb the issue and improve mental health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
The rising prevalence of drug abuse among adolescents in Maiduguri poses a significant public health challenge. Adolescents abusing substances are at higher risk of developing mental health issues, which often go undiagnosed and untreated due to stigma and lack of awareness (Mohammed et al., 2024).
Despite efforts to address drug abuse, there is a lack of comprehensive data on its mental health impact in Maiduguri. This gap limits the ability to design effective prevention and treatment programs tailored to the unique socio-cultural and economic factors in the region. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the relationship between drug abuse and mental health among adolescents.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the types of drugs commonly abused by adolescents in Maiduguri.
2. To evaluate the impact of drug abuse on the mental health of adolescents.
3. To propose strategies for reducing drug abuse and mitigating its mental health consequences.
Research Questions
1. What are the common drugs abused by adolescents in Maiduguri?
2. How does drug abuse affect the mental health of adolescents in Maiduguri?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce drug abuse and its mental health impact among adolescents?
Research Hypotheses
1. Adolescents in Maiduguri commonly abuse specific types of drugs.
2. Drug abuse significantly impacts the mental health of adolescents in Maiduguri.
3. Effective strategies can reduce drug abuse and improve adolescent mental health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on adolescents aged 13–19 receiving care at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, between 2023 and 2025. Data will be gathered through clinical records, interviews, and mental health assessment tools. Limitations include potential underreporting of drug use and challenges in accessing all affected adolescents due to security concerns in the region.
