Background of the Study

Stigma remains a significant barrier to effective mental health care globally, often leading to poor treatment outcomes for psychiatric patients (Corrigan et al., 2023). Stigma manifests in various forms, including social exclusion, self-stigmatization, and discriminatory practices, all of which can deter patients from seeking help or adhering to prescribed treatments (Henderson et al., 2024).

In Nigeria, cultural beliefs, inadequate mental health awareness, and limited resources contribute to the perpetuation of stigma against individuals with psychiatric disorders (Adepoju et al., 2023). The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, one of the country’s foremost mental health facilities, serves patients grappling with both their conditions and the stigma associated with psychiatric care.

Understanding the impact of stigma on treatment compliance is crucial for improving mental health outcomes and fostering a supportive environment for recovery. This study focuses on identifying how stigma affects the compliance behaviors of psychiatric patients, with the aim of informing stigma-reduction strategies in mental health services.

Statement of the Problem

Despite advances in psychiatric treatment, non-compliance remains a prevalent issue among patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro. Studies suggest that stigma, both external and internalized, plays a critical role in undermining adherence to treatment regimens (Nwoke et al., 2024). This non-compliance contributes to relapses, prolonged hospitalizations, and increased healthcare costs.

The pervasive stigma surrounding mental health in Ogun State further complicates these challenges, as patients may avoid treatment or disengage from prescribed plans due to fear of judgment or discrimination. However, the specific mechanisms through which stigma influences compliance at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, are not well-documented. This study seeks to address this gap, providing actionable insights for healthcare providers and policymakers.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the forms of stigma experienced by psychiatric patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.

2. To assess the relationship between stigma and treatment compliance among psychiatric patients.

3. To propose strategies for mitigating stigma and improving treatment compliance.

Research Questions

1. What forms of stigma are experienced by psychiatric patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro?

2. How does stigma affect treatment compliance among psychiatric patients?

3. What strategies can reduce stigma and improve treatment compliance?

Research Hypotheses

1. Psychiatric patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, experience significant levels of stigma.

2. There is a negative correlation between stigma and treatment compliance among psychiatric patients.

3. Implementing stigma-reduction strategies improves treatment compliance among psychiatric patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on psychiatric patients receiving care at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, between 2023 and 2025. Data will be collected through patient interviews, compliance records, and stigma assessment tools. Limitations include the potential reluctance of patients to disclose experiences of stigma and the generalizability of findings beyond the study site.
