Background of the Study
Treatment adherence is critical for the effective management of chronic conditions and overall health improvement among elderly patients (Adamu et al., 2023). Family engagement, encompassing emotional support, active participation in care, and assistance with treatment routines, has been shown to enhance adherence by fostering motivation and reducing psychological barriers (Cohen et al., 2024).
In Sokoto State, the elderly population faces numerous challenges, including limited healthcare access, high dependency rates, and socio-economic constraints. Traditional family systems are often the primary support structures, playing a pivotal role in the management of health conditions (Bello et al., 2023). However, the extent to which family engagement impacts treatment adherence in this context remains poorly understood, limiting the ability to design family-centered interventions.
This study examines the role of family engagement in promoting treatment adherence among elderly patients, offering valuable insights into its implications for healthcare delivery in Sokoto State.
Statement of the Problem
Poor treatment adherence among elderly patients in Sokoto State contributes to increased disease burden, frequent hospitalizations, and reduced quality of life (Okonjo et al., 2024). While family engagement is recognized as a key factor in improving adherence, its specific impact in this context is under-researched.
Cultural and socio-economic factors, as well as the evolving dynamics of family structures, may influence the level and effectiveness of family involvement in elderly care. Without an understanding of these dynamics, healthcare interventions may fail to address the root causes of non-adherence. This study seeks to explore the role of family engagement in improving treatment adherence among elderly patients in Sokoto State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of family engagement in the treatment of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
2. To evaluate the relationship between family engagement and treatment adherence among elderly patients.
3. To identify barriers to effective family engagement in elderly care in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of family engagement in the treatment of elderly patients in Sokoto State?
2. How does family engagement influence treatment adherence among elderly patients?
3. What barriers hinder effective family engagement in elderly care in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Family engagement significantly varies among elderly patients in Sokoto State.
2. Family engagement positively influences treatment adherence among elderly patients.
3. Barriers to family engagement negatively impact treatment adherence in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 years and above in Sokoto State, examining their treatment adherence and family involvement from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include potential response biases in self-reported adherence and the challenge of isolating family engagement effects from other influencing factors.
Definitions of Terms
