Background of the Study

Depression is one of the most common and disabling mental health disorders, affecting millions of individuals globally and significantly impairing their daily functioning (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, the burden of depression is on the rise due to economic hardship, social isolation, and inadequate mental health care services (Adegbite & Okonkwo, 2023). Effective treatment often requires a combination of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions, with nursing care playing a critical role in patient recovery.

Nurses are at the frontline of mental health care, providing essential support to patients with depression through medication administration, psychotherapy, emotional support, and lifestyle guidance (Eze & Adebayo, 2023). Studies have shown that compassionate nursing care can improve patient outcomes by fostering trust, encouraging adherence to treatment, and promoting emotional well-being (Olawale et al., 2024).

Despite the recognized importance of nursing care in mental health treatment, there is limited research in Nigeria assessing its impact on patients with depression. At the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Edo State, nurses play a significant role in managing depression, yet the effectiveness of their interventions remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate the influence of nursing care on depression recovery, providing insights into best practices for improving patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Depression is a growing public health concern in Nigeria, yet mental health services remain underfunded and understaffed, limiting access to quality care (Bello & Adeyemi, 2024). Nurses are central to the management of depression, but challenges such as high patient loads, stigma, and inadequate training in psychological interventions often affect the quality of care provided (Okafor & Eze, 2023).

Without empirical evidence on how nursing care influences depression recovery, it is difficult to develop effective policies to enhance mental health nursing practices. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the impact of nursing care on patients with depression at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu. Findings will help improve nursing practices and inform policy decisions on mental health care delivery in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nursing care on the recovery of patients with depression.
  2. To examine the relationship between nurse-patient interactions and adherence to depression treatment.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the delivery of nursing care to patients with depression.

Research Questions

  1. How does nursing care influence the recovery of patients with depression?
  2. What is the relationship between nurse-patient interactions and adherence to depression treatment?
  3. What challenges affect the delivery of nursing care to patients with depression?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nursing care does not significantly impact the recovery of patients with depression.
  2. There is no significant relationship between nurse-patient interactions and adherence to depression treatment.
  3. Challenges in nursing care delivery do not significantly affect depression treatment outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on patients with depression receiving nursing care at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Edo State. Limitations include variations in individual patient responses to nursing care and self-reported data reliability. The study does not cover other mental health disorders.
