Background of the Study

Advancements in technology have led to significant developments in robotic-assisted healthcare, offering new ways to improve patient care, reduce human error, and enhance precision in medical procedures. In emergency care, the use of robotic systems has the potential to improve patient outcomes by facilitating precise, minimally invasive interventions, reducing recovery time, and lowering the risk of complications. Robotic-assisted systems can be used in a variety of emergency scenarios, such as trauma surgery, emergency surgeries, and even in providing support in critical care.

Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Zaria, one of Nigeria’s prominent teaching hospitals, has the infrastructure and capacity to explore the use of robotic-assisted technologies in the delivery of emergency care. The hospital’s emergency department faces challenges such as a high influx of patients and the need for quick, accurate medical intervention. Robotic systems could assist emergency healthcare providers by enhancing the precision of procedures, optimizing workflows, and improving patient recovery times.

Robotic-assisted care can be particularly valuable in emergency situations where time is critical, and the ability to perform precise surgical procedures can be the difference between life and death. These systems allow for less invasive surgeries, reducing the need for large incisions, which can minimize infection risks and accelerate patient recovery. Despite the potential benefits, the adoption of robotic-assisted emergency care is still in its early stages in Nigeria, and there is limited research on its impact on patient outcomes.

This study will evaluate the use of robotic-assisted emergency care at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, examining its influence on patient outcomes, such as recovery time, complications, and overall mortality rates.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

In emergency healthcare settings, the need for timely and accurate interventions is crucial to ensuring favorable patient outcomes. However, traditional methods of emergency care may not always meet these demands, especially in complex or life-threatening cases. Robotic-assisted systems have the potential to revolutionize emergency care by offering more accurate and efficient medical procedures, reducing human error, and improving recovery times.

At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, the emergency department faces challenges in handling urgent and complicated cases where precision and speed are crucial. Despite the potential advantages of robotic-assisted emergency care, its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes at ABUTH remains unexplored. There is limited research on the integration of robotic systems in emergency care settings in Nigeria, particularly in terms of their impact on patient recovery, complication rates, and overall mortality.

This study aims to investigate the impact of robotic-assisted emergency care on patient outcomes at ABUTH, examining its role in improving the precision of interventions and the overall quality of care delivered to emergency patients.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of robotic-assisted emergency care on patient outcomes at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.

2. To assess the effectiveness of robotic-assisted interventions in improving recovery time and reducing complications in emergency care.

3. To explore the perceptions and experiences of emergency healthcare providers regarding the use of robotic systems in patient care.

Research Questions

1. How does robotic-assisted emergency care impact patient outcomes at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?

2. What is the effectiveness of robotic-assisted interventions in improving recovery time and reducing complications in emergency care?

3. What are the experiences and perceptions of emergency healthcare providers regarding the use of robotic systems in patient care?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Robotic-assisted emergency care does not significantly improve patient outcomes at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.

2. H₀: Robotic-assisted interventions do not significantly reduce recovery time and complications in emergency care.

3. H₀: There is no significant difference in the perceptions of emergency healthcare providers regarding the use of robotic systems in patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the use of robotic-assisted emergency care at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include access to robotic-assisted systems, staff resistance to new technology, and challenges in measuring patient outcomes accurately.

Definitions of Terms

• Robotic-Assisted Emergency Care: The use of robotic systems to assist in medical procedures in emergency situations, such as surgeries or diagnostics.

• Patient Outcomes: The results of medical care, including recovery time, complication rates, and mortality.

• Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital: A tertiary healthcare institution in Zaria, Nigeria, providing medical education and healthcare services.
