Background of the Study (400 words)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the healthcare landscape, with applications ranging from clinical decision support to predictive analytics. In emergency nursing, AI has the potential to improve the efficiency and accuracy of patient assessments, triage, and diagnosis. AI tools such as machine learning algorithms can analyze large datasets to identify patterns in patient symptoms, predict outcomes, and support decision-making in time-sensitive emergency situations.

Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DSUTH), located in Asaba, is one of the leading healthcare institutions in southern Nigeria, providing comprehensive emergency care services. As a teaching hospital, DSUTH is also involved in research and training, which makes it an ideal setting to explore the use of emerging technologies such as AI in healthcare. Given the high volume of emergency cases and the urgent nature of the care provided, integrating AI tools could significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency nursing practice.

AI can be used to assist emergency nurses by providing real-time recommendations based on patient data, improving the triage process, and aiding in early diagnosis. For example, AI-powered systems can assess vital signs, interpret lab results, and flag abnormalities in patient data, helping nurses make timely interventions. However, the integration of AI into emergency care also presents challenges, including technical limitations, the need for specialized training, and concerns about the ethical implications of relying on AI for decision-making.

This study aims to investigate the use of artificial intelligence in emergency nursing care at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, assessing both its potential benefits and the challenges associated with its implementation.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

The use of AI in healthcare has grown rapidly, offering many benefits in diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making. However, the adoption of AI tools in emergency nursing, particularly in resource-limited settings like Nigeria, remains underexplored. At Delta State University Teaching Hospital, while AI has been implemented in some areas of patient care, its role in emergency nursing care is still emerging. There is a lack of research into how AI tools are being integrated into the nursing practice and whether they improve the quality of care provided in the emergency department.

Despite the potential advantages of AI, the healthcare workforce, particularly emergency nurses, may face challenges in adopting these technologies due to insufficient training, lack of technical infrastructure, or resistance to change. Additionally, concerns about data privacy and the ethical use of AI in patient care need to be addressed. This study seeks to investigate how AI is currently being utilized in emergency nursing at DSUTH, the challenges faced by nurses in adopting this technology, and its impact on patient care outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the extent of AI use in emergency nursing care at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To evaluate the impact of AI on emergency nurses’ decision-making and patient outcomes.

3. To identify the challenges associated with integrating AI into emergency nursing practice.

Research Questions

1. How is AI being utilized in emergency nursing care at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?

2. What impact does AI have on emergency nurses’ decision-making and patient outcomes in the emergency department?

3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in adopting and using AI in patient care?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: The use of AI in emergency nursing does not significantly improve decision-making and patient outcomes.

2. H₀: The integration of AI into emergency nursing practice does not significantly affect the efficiency of care provided.

3. H₀: There are no significant challenges faced by emergency nurses in using AI tools for patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the use of AI in emergency nursing care at Delta State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include challenges in measuring the impact of AI on patient outcomes, variability in AI implementation, and potential resistance to new technologies among nursing staff.

Definitions of Terms

• Artificial Intelligence (AI): The use of computer algorithms to simulate human intelligence processes, such as decision-making, problem-solving, and data analysis.

• Emergency Nurses: Nurses specializing in the provision of urgent and critical care to patients in emergency medical situations.

• Delta State University Teaching Hospital: A tertiary medical institution in Asaba, Delta State, providing emergency care and other specialized services.
