Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Environmental sustainability is a critical issue in Nigeria, where rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth have led to severe environmental challenges, including deforestation, waste management issues, and degradation of natural resources. In Dutse South Local Government Area (LGA) of Jigawa State, local government authorities have recognized the need to implement strategies aimed at preserving the environment for future generations. Key initiatives include waste management programs, tree planting campaigns, and sustainable agricultural practices that align with global sustainability goals (Yakubu & Olowu, 2023). However, these programs have faced numerous challenges such as limited funding, lack of public awareness, and inadequate coordination between various stakeholders. The effectiveness of these initiatives has been debated, and this study seeks to evaluate the strategies employed by the local government in promoting environmental sustainability, assessing their impact and identifying areas for improvement. This study will also highlight the role of local communities and the private sector in achieving environmental sustainability goals in Dutse South LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by Dutse South LGA to promote environmental sustainability through various programs, challenges such as inadequate financial resources, lack of technical expertise, and insufficient community participation continue to undermine the effectiveness of these initiatives. Local government strategies have not been as successful as anticipated in achieving long-term environmental sustainability, and the lack of coordination between local authorities and environmental organizations has also contributed to these shortcomings. This study will investigate the strategies employed by the local government to promote sustainability and identify the barriers to their success.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide an in-depth evaluation of local government strategies for promoting environmental sustainability in Dutse South LGA. The findings will inform policy decisions, offering recommendations to improve the local government's approach to environmental protection. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader understanding of the role local governments play in environmental sustainability within the Nigerian context.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the environmental sustainability strategies employed by Dutse South LGA in Jigawa State, with particular attention to waste management, conservation efforts, and sustainable agriculture. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing relevant data due to bureaucratic delays and the limited financial resources available to the local government.
