Background of the Study

Trauma cases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in emergency settings. Trauma, which includes physical injuries from accidents, violence, or natural disasters, often requires immediate intervention to minimize damage, prevent complications, and save lives (Ezenwa & Ogundipe, 2023). Emergency nurses play a crucial role in the rapid assessment, stabilization, and management of trauma patients in the emergency department. Their ability to provide timely and effective care directly influences patient outcomes, including survival and recovery (Chukwuemeka & Abiola, 2024).

Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, Imo State, is one of the key hospitals in the southeastern region of Nigeria providing critical care for trauma patients. The center handles a variety of trauma cases, including road traffic accidents, gunshot wounds, and injuries resulting from violent crimes. Despite the importance of emergency nursing interventions in trauma care, there is limited research specifically evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions in Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in the context of FMC Owerri.

This study aims to evaluate the emergency nursing interventions implemented in trauma cases at FMC Owerri, focusing on their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. By assessing the role of emergency nurses, the study will identify best practices, challenges faced in trauma care, and areas for improvement. It is expected that the findings will inform the development of training programs and policies aimed at enhancing the quality of emergency nursing care in trauma situations.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Trauma cases present a significant challenge for healthcare systems, particularly in emergency departments where rapid intervention is critical. Emergency nurses are at the forefront of trauma care, performing critical interventions such as airway management, hemodynamic stabilization, and wound care. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the specific emergency nursing interventions used in trauma cases at FMC Owerri and their impact on patient outcomes. The lack of empirical data on this topic makes it difficult to assess the adequacy of emergency nursing care, identify strengths, and address weaknesses.

The effectiveness of emergency nursing interventions can be influenced by various factors, including the availability of resources, the training and experience of nurses, and institutional policies. Despite the importance of these factors, there is insufficient research on how these elements impact patient recovery in trauma cases at FMC Owerri. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the interventions provided by emergency nurses in trauma situations and exploring how these interventions influence patient outcomes such as recovery time, survival rates, and complications.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the emergency nursing interventions provided in trauma cases at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

2. To assess the effectiveness of emergency nursing interventions in improving patient outcomes in trauma cases.

3. To identify challenges faced by emergency nurses in trauma care and propose recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

1. What emergency nursing interventions are provided in trauma cases at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri?

2. How effective are emergency nursing interventions in improving patient outcomes in trauma cases?

3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in trauma care, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Emergency nursing interventions do not significantly improve patient outcomes in trauma cases at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

2. H₀: There are no significant challenges faced by emergency nurses in providing care for trauma patients.

3. H₀: The availability of resources does not significantly affect the effectiveness of emergency nursing interventions in trauma care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the emergency nursing interventions provided in trauma cases at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. The study is limited to one hospital, and the findings may not be generalizable to other healthcare facilities. Additionally, the study may be limited by factors such as the availability of patient records and the willingness of nurses to participate.

Definitions of Terms

• Emergency Nursing Interventions: Immediate actions taken by emergency nurses to stabilize patients and prevent further harm in trauma cases, including triage, wound care, and pain management.

• Trauma Cases: Physical injuries caused by accidents, violence, or other external factors requiring immediate medical attention.

• Patient Outcomes: The results of medical interventions, including survival rates, recovery time, and the presence of complications.
