Background of the Study

Burnout is a common phenomenon among healthcare professionals, particularly psychiatric nurses, due to the emotionally demanding nature of their work. The constant exposure to traumatic situations, high patient caseloads, and the emotional strain of caring for patients with severe mental health conditions can lead to burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment (Olowale & Nwachukwu, 2023). This has serious implications for both the well-being of nurses and the quality of care provided to patients.

Self-care refers to the actions individuals take to maintain their health and well-being, including physical, emotional, and mental practices that support personal well-being (Chinwe & Ibrahim, 2024). For psychiatric nurses, self-care is crucial in preventing burnout and maintaining their emotional resilience. Research indicates that self-care activities, such as engaging in physical exercise, practicing mindfulness, and seeking social support, can mitigate the effects of stress and reduce burnout levels among healthcare professionals (Suleiman & Bello, 2024).

Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Kaduna State is one of the leading mental health institutions in Nigeria, providing care to a large number of psychiatric patients. Nurses at this hospital face significant emotional and psychological challenges in their roles, and burnout is a common issue. Despite the known importance of self-care in preventing burnout, little research has been conducted on the relationship between self-care practices and burnout among psychiatric nurses in Nigerian healthcare settings. This study aims to investigate the connection between self-care and burnout among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Psychiatric nurses are exposed to significant levels of stress and emotional strain in their daily work. This can lead to burnout, which in turn affects their job performance, personal well-being, and the quality of patient care. Burnout is a widespread issue in the healthcare profession, but especially in psychiatric nursing, where the emotional demands are particularly high. Nurses who experience burnout may have reduced empathy, poor work performance, and increased absenteeism, all of which affect patient outcomes and contribute to staff turnover (Suleiman & Bello, 2024).

Self-care is a critical factor in preventing and managing burnout, yet there is limited research on how self-care practices influence burnout among psychiatric nurses in Nigerian healthcare settings. While self-care strategies such as exercise, relaxation techniques, and social support are known to reduce stress and prevent burnout, many nurses in Nigeria may not engage in consistent self-care practices due to work-related constraints, societal stigma, or lack of awareness (Chinwe & Ibrahim, 2024).

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-care and burnout among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State, and to identify the most effective self-care practices for preventing burnout in this context. The findings will contribute to the development of targeted interventions that can support nurses’ well-being and enhance the overall quality of care provided to patients.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the relationship between self-care practices and burnout among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State.

2. To identify the most common self-care practices among psychiatric nurses and their effectiveness in preventing burnout.

3. To assess the impact of burnout on job performance and patient care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between self-care practices and burnout among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State?

2. What are the most common self-care practices employed by psychiatric nurses, and how effective are they in preventing burnout?

3. How does burnout affect job performance and patient care among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between self-care practices and burnout among psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State.

2. H₀: Self-care practices do not significantly reduce burnout among psychiatric nurses.

3. H₀: Burnout does not significantly impact job performance or patient care among psychiatric nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on psychiatric nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State, examining their self-care practices and the impact on burnout levels. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting self-care practices and burnout, as well as the challenge of measuring long-term burnout outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

• Self-Care: The actions taken by individuals to maintain or improve their physical, emotional, and mental health.

• Burnout: A state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to stress, often leading to decreased job performance and negative emotional health outcomes.
