Background of the Study (400 words)

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and influence emotions, both in oneself and in others. It plays a vital role in social interactions, decision-making, and coping with stress, all of which are essential skills in the healthcare environment. In psychiatric nursing, emotional intelligence is particularly important, as nurses frequently interact with patients experiencing severe emotional distress, such as those with mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Nurses’ ability to effectively manage their own emotions and empathize with patients is critical in providing compassionate care and maintaining a therapeutic relationship (Olowale & Nwachukwu, 2023).

Research suggests that higher levels of emotional intelligence in healthcare professionals are associated with better communication, improved patient care, and enhanced job performance (Suleiman & Bello, 2024). Emotional intelligence enables nurses to handle stressful situations, make sound decisions, and respond appropriately to patients’ emotional needs, which are crucial in psychiatric settings. Furthermore, emotional intelligence may contribute to a positive work environment, job satisfaction, and reduced burnout, all of which can influence job performance (Chinwe & Ibrahim, 2024).

University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, is one of the leading teaching hospitals in Nigeria, providing both medical and psychiatric services to a large and diverse patient population. Psychiatric nurses at UCH play a key role in patient care, interacting with individuals who require specialized psychiatric interventions. However, there has been limited research on how emotional intelligence impacts psychiatric nurses’ job performance in Nigerian healthcare settings. This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance among psychiatric nurses at UCH, Ibadan, with a particular focus on the implications for patient care, job satisfaction, and overall performance outcomes.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Psychiatric nurses are often exposed to emotionally taxing situations, dealing with patients experiencing a range of mental health disorders. In such an environment, emotional intelligence is crucial for effective patient care, as it helps nurses manage their own emotions, empathize with patients, and maintain professional boundaries. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence examining the relationship between emotional intelligence and psychiatric nurses’ job performance in Nigerian healthcare settings.

At the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, psychiatric nurses play a critical role in delivering mental health services. Despite the importance of emotional intelligence in their professional roles, there is limited research on how this factor influences their job performance, including communication, decision-making, and patient care. Additionally, there is a need to understand the relationship between emotional intelligence and outcomes such as job satisfaction, emotional well-being, and professional growth.

This study seeks to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance among psychiatric nurses at UCH, Ibadan, aiming to highlight how EI impacts job satisfaction, job efficiency, and patient care outcomes. The findings may inform training and development programs aimed at improving emotional intelligence among nurses, ultimately enhancing healthcare delivery.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on psychiatric nurses at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and will assess the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance.
