Background of the Study
Mental health issues among the elderly are a growing public health concern, particularly in low-resource settings where access to psychiatric care is limited (WHO, 2024). Aging is often associated with cognitive decline, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders, exacerbated by social isolation, chronic illnesses, and financial instability (Adeoye & Bello, 2023). In Nigeria, the stigma surrounding mental health further discourages elderly individuals from seeking professional help (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
Community-based mental health interventions (CBMHIs) have emerged as effective alternatives to institutionalized psychiatric care, offering accessible and culturally sensitive mental health support (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2023). These interventions include psychoeducation, counseling, peer support groups, and outreach programs integrated within primary healthcare systems and local communities. Taraba State, like many other regions, has implemented various CBMHIs, but their effectiveness in improving elderly patients’ mental health outcomes remains largely unexamined.
This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of CBMHIs in addressing mental health challenges among elderly patients in Taraba State, evaluating factors such as accessibility, patient outcomes, and overall program efficiency. Findings from this research will provide insights into the strengths and limitations of these interventions, informing policymakers and healthcare providers on best practices for elderly mental healthcare.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of mental health challenges among the elderly, there is a significant gap in mental health service provision, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities of Taraba State (Bello et al., 2023). Many elderly individuals lack access to professional psychiatric services due to financial constraints, transportation difficulties, and stigma. As a result, community-based interventions have been introduced to bridge this gap. However, their impact remains underexplored, raising concerns about their long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
Furthermore, existing CBMHIs may not be adequately tailored to address the unique psychological, social, and cultural needs of elderly patients. Without empirical assessment, it is unclear whether these interventions lead to measurable improvements in mental well-being or simply serve as short-term relief mechanisms. This study will critically analyze the effectiveness of CBMHIs, identifying areas for improvement and recommending strategies for enhancing their impact.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on elderly individuals (aged 60 and above) in selected communities of Taraba State, assessing the impact of CBMHIs on their mental health. The study is limited by potential biases in self-reported mental health conditions, variations in the implementation of interventions, and difficulties in isolating CBMHIs’ effects from other influencing factors.
