Background of the Study (400 words)
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health condition that affects many women after childbirth, with symptoms including sadness, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty bonding with the baby (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2024). PPD can have significant consequences for both the mother and child, including impaired mother-infant bonding, increased risk of child developmental issues, and long-term effects on the mother’s mental health. The need for effective treatment strategies for PPD has led to the exploration of various therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy, medication, and support interventions. One such approach gaining attention is group therapy, which offers a collaborative environment where women with PPD can share experiences and receive emotional support from peers.
Group therapy has been shown to be effective in improving mental health outcomes for women with PPD by providing a space for open communication, reducing feelings of isolation, and enhancing coping mechanisms (Bello & Nwachukwu, 2023). In group therapy settings, patients can learn from others' experiences, validate their feelings, and develop practical strategies for managing their symptoms. Moreover, the supportive atmosphere in group therapy promotes mutual understanding and empathy, which can be particularly helpful in alleviating the emotional distress associated with postpartum depression (Suleiman & Akinola, 2025).
In Nigeria, the mental health care system is often under-resourced, and postpartum depression remains a somewhat neglected area of mental health care. However, there is growing recognition of the need to address PPD through accessible and effective interventions. The Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, offers a unique setting for evaluating the impact of group therapy on women suffering from PPD, given the hospital’s focus on maternal and child health services.
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of group therapy on women with postpartum depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, focusing on improvements in emotional well-being, coping skills, and overall recovery.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Postpartum depression is a major public health issue that affects a significant number of women globally, including in Nigeria. Despite its high prevalence, PPD remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in many parts of the country (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2024). Women with PPD often face stigma, inadequate mental health support, and a lack of awareness regarding available treatment options. While traditional treatments, such as individual therapy and pharmacotherapy, are commonly used to manage PPD, group therapy has emerged as a promising alternative.
Group therapy for PPD offers a unique opportunity for women to connect with others experiencing similar challenges, share coping strategies, and receive emotional support in a safe and empathetic environment (Bello & Nwachukwu, 2023). However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of group therapy in treating postpartum depression in Nigeria, particularly in Ebonyi State. The Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki offers an ideal setting for evaluating the impact of group therapy on women with PPD, but the efficacy of this approach has yet to be fully assessed.
This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of group therapy in improving mental health outcomes for women with postpartum depression. The research will assess improvements in emotional well-being, coping strategies, and overall recovery, providing valuable insights into the potential benefits of group therapy in the treatment of PPD.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of group therapy in improving the emotional well-being of women with postpartum depression.
2. To assess the impact of group therapy on women’s coping skills during the postpartum period.
3. To examine the overall recovery outcomes of women with postpartum depression undergoing group therapy.
Research Questions
1. How does group therapy affect the emotional well-being of women with postpartum depression?
2. What is the impact of group therapy on coping skills in women with postpartum depression?
3. How does group therapy contribute to the overall recovery of women with postpartum depression?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Group therapy does not significantly improve the emotional well-being of women with postpartum depression.
2. H₀: Group therapy does not significantly enhance coping skills in women with postpartum depression.
3. H₀: Group therapy does not significantly contribute to the overall recovery of women with postpartum depression.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on women diagnosed with postpartum depression at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Limitations include challenges in recruiting a diverse sample, potential biases in self-reported data, and variability in the effectiveness of group therapy across participants.
