Background of the Study (400 words)
Psychiatric wards are critical healthcare settings that provide care for individuals suffering from mental illnesses. However, these environments can be challenging due to the potential for violent behavior from patients. Violence in psychiatric wards can manifest as physical assaults, verbal abuse, or threats from patients towards nurses and other healthcare providers (Okeke & Olawale, 2023). Nurses working in psychiatric settings are particularly vulnerable to these incidents, which can have profound effects on their emotional well-being and job satisfaction (Chinwe & Yusuf, 2024).
The emotional toll on nurses exposed to violence is significant. Research indicates that nurses who experience frequent or severe violence are more likely to suffer from burnout, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Bello, 2024). The emotional well-being of nurses is not only crucial for their mental health but also impacts the quality of care provided to patients. Emotionally distressed nurses may have lower morale, reduced empathy, and impaired decision-making, which can negatively affect patient care and outcomes (Usman, 2024).
In Nigeria, healthcare professionals, particularly nurses in psychiatric wards, face unique challenges due to limited resources, understaffing, and societal stigma towards mental health. These factors exacerbate the impact of workplace violence, making it critical to understand how these experiences influence the emotional well-being of nurses (Chinwe & Yusuf, 2024). This study aims to investigate the effects of violence in psychiatric wards on nurses’ emotional well-being, using a case study of the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, Imo State. By exploring the extent of violence and its psychological consequences, the study seeks to provide recommendations for improving workplace safety and supporting the mental health of healthcare workers.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Violence in psychiatric wards is a serious issue that affects healthcare workers' safety and emotional well-being. Nurses in psychiatric settings, particularly at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, Imo State, are at high risk of encountering violent patients who may engage in physical aggression or verbal abuse (Okeke & Olawale, 2023). This violence not only puts nurses at physical risk but also takes a significant toll on their mental health. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to violence can lead to emotional distress, burnout, and even PTSD (Bello, 2024).
Despite these challenges, little research has focused on the psychological impact of violence on nurses in Nigerian psychiatric wards. The lack of institutional support and coping mechanisms for nurses further exacerbates this problem. Without adequate mental health support, nurses may experience decreased job satisfaction, reduced productivity, and a higher turnover rate (Chinwe & Yusuf, 2024). Moreover, the emotional distress experienced by nurses can affect their interactions with patients, leading to lower-quality care.
This study aims to address the gap in knowledge regarding the emotional well-being of nurses in psychiatric wards and to explore the impact of violence on their mental health. Understanding the relationship between workplace violence and nurses' emotional well-being will provide insights into effective strategies for improving the safety and well-being of healthcare workers in psychiatric settings.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the extent of violence experienced by nurses in psychiatric wards at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.
2. To examine the impact of workplace violence on nurses' emotional well-being and job satisfaction.
3. To identify strategies for mitigating the effects of violence on nurses’ emotional health.
Research Questions
1. How prevalent is violence in psychiatric wards at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri?
2. What is the effect of workplace violence on nurses' emotional well-being?
3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the impact of violence on nurses’ mental health in psychiatric wards?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between workplace violence and nurses' emotional well-being in psychiatric wards.
2. H₀: Workplace violence does not significantly affect nurses' job satisfaction in psychiatric wards.
3. H₀: Strategies to reduce workplace violence will not significantly improve nurses' emotional well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the psychiatric wards of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data, the variability in exposure to violence across nurses, and the inability to generalize the findings to other healthcare settings.

• Workplace Violence: Any physical or psychological harm inflicted upon healthcare workers by patients, family members, or colleagues in a healthcare setting.
• Emotional Well-Being: The psychological state of an individual, encompassing feelings of happiness, fulfillment, and emotional resilience.
• Burnout: A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to stressful work environments.
