Background of the Study

Cancer prevention awareness is critical to reducing the incidence of cancer, and healthcare professionals, particularly oncology nurses, play an essential role in educating the public about cancer prevention measures. In Nigeria, there is a need for more awareness and understanding of cancer prevention, as many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, reducing the chances of successful treatment. Oncology nurses, with their expertise in cancer care, can serve as important advocates for cancer prevention in local communities. This study seeks to explore the role of oncology nurses in promoting cancer prevention awareness in Nigerian communities, with a specific focus on Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Ekiti State.

Statement of the Problem

While cancer treatment and care are crucial, cancer prevention strategies are often overlooked, especially in rural and underserved communities. Oncology nurses, who interact with patients and the public regularly, can influence cancer prevention efforts by educating communities on lifestyle modifications, early detection, and risk factors. However, the extent of oncology nurses' involvement in these efforts in Nigerian communities remains unclear. This study will address this gap by examining the role of oncology nurses at ESUTH in promoting cancer prevention awareness.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the involvement of oncology nurses in promoting cancer prevention awareness in Ekiti State communities.
  2. To identify the strategies used by oncology nurses to increase public awareness of cancer prevention.
  3. To explore the challenges oncology nurses face in promoting cancer prevention and awareness.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are oncology nurses involved in cancer prevention awareness campaigns in Ekiti State?
  2. What strategies do oncology nurses use to promote cancer prevention in their communities?
  3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in educating the public about cancer prevention?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses at ESUTH are actively involved in promoting cancer prevention awareness in their communities.
  2. Oncology nurses use various strategies such as community outreach, media campaigns, and educational programs to promote cancer prevention.
  3. Barriers such as limited resources and public misconceptions about cancer prevention hinder the effectiveness of these awareness efforts.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital and their involvement in cancer prevention efforts in local communities. Limitations may include a small sample size and challenges in measuring the direct impact of nursing interventions on cancer prevention rates.
