Background of the Study
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of cancer treatment that can cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the extremities. Oncology nurses play a vital role in managing these symptoms through early detection, education, and supportive care. This study will explore the impact of oncology nurses' interventions in reducing the severity of CIPN at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
CIPN can severely affect a patient’s quality of life and hinder their ability to continue cancer treatment. Despite its prevalence, CIPN often goes undiagnosed or untreated. The role of oncology nurses in early identification and symptom management is crucial in minimizing the impact of CIPN on patients. This study seeks to assess how oncology nurses contribute to reducing the severity of this condition.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of oncology nurses in identifying and managing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in reducing the severity of CIPN.
3. To explore the impact of early detection and symptom management on patient outcomes and treatment adherence.
Research Questions
1. How do oncology nurses identify and manage chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy?
2. What nursing interventions are most effective in reducing the severity of CIPN?
3. How does effective CIPN management by oncology nurses affect patient outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nursing interventions significantly reduce the severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in cancer patients.
2. Early detection and management of CIPN by oncology nurses improve patient adherence to chemotherapy treatment.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on oncology nurses at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and their role in managing CIPN. Limitations may include variations in nurse training, patient variability in response to interventions, and the difficulty in assessing the subjective symptoms of CIPN.

• Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN): A side effect of chemotherapy characterized by pain, numbness, and weakness in the peripheral nervous system.
• Oncology Nurse Interventions: Actions taken by oncology nurses to manage and mitigate symptoms of cancer and its treatment, such as educating patients, monitoring symptoms, and administering supportive care.
