Pain management is a critical aspect of oncology nursing, as cancer patients often experience significant pain due to the disease itself or as a result of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Effective pain management improves patients' quality of life, aids in recovery, and can prevent the development of chronic pain. Oncology nurses are responsible for assessing pain levels, administering analgesics, and advocating for comprehensive pain management plans. However, despite advances in pain management strategies, oncology nurses face numerous challenges in addressing the complex pain needs of cancer patients.
Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC) in Osun State is a leading medical institution offering oncology services. The hospital's oncology nursing team plays a crucial role in pain management, but the challenges they face in providing optimal care remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate oncology nurses' perceptions of the challenges they face in managing pain for cancer patients and to identify areas for improvement in pain management strategies.
Pain management remains one of the most challenging aspects of cancer care. Oncology nurses at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital may face barriers such as inadequate training, insufficient resources, patient non-compliance, and the complex nature of cancer-related pain. These challenges may hinder their ability to provide effective pain relief, negatively impacting the quality of care and patient outcomes. This study seeks to identify these challenges and explore how they can be overcome to improve pain management practices.
This study will focus on oncology nurses at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, examining their perceptions of pain management challenges. Limitations include the subjective nature of pain assessment and the difficulty in measuring the long-term impact of nursing interventions on pain outcomes.
