Background of the Study

Elderly patients present unique challenges in emergency care due to the complex medical conditions associated with aging, such as chronic diseases, cognitive impairments, and frailty. At Yobe State Specialist Hospital, emergency nurses often care for elderly patients who may have multiple health conditions requiring immediate attention. The approach of emergency nurses in handling elderly patients is crucial for ensuring effective management and improving patient outcomes.

The approach to emergency care for elderly patients involves a combination of specialized knowledge, empathy, communication skills, and the ability to recognize and respond to age-related health issues quickly. Emergency nurses must consider factors such as polypharmacy, mobility limitations, and cognitive decline when providing care. However, there is a need for a more systematic evaluation of emergency nurses' approaches to elderly care in Yobe State Specialist Hospital, including how well they adapt their care strategies to meet the needs of elderly patients.

Statement of the Problem

Elderly patients in emergency situations often have unique needs that require specialized care. While emergency nurses at Yobe State Specialist Hospital are trained to provide care, there may be gaps in their approach to elderly patients, particularly in recognizing and addressing age-specific health concerns. This study will examine the methods used by emergency nurses in handling elderly patients and assess their effectiveness in meeting the unique needs of this population.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the approach of emergency nurses to handling elderly patients at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of emergency nursing strategies in managing the health conditions of elderly patients.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving emergency nursing care for elderly patients.

Research Questions

  1. What is the approach of emergency nurses in handling elderly patients at Yobe State Specialist Hospital?
  2. How effective are the strategies employed by emergency nurses in managing elderly patients' health conditions in emergency situations?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve emergency nursing care for elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses’ approach to elderly patients is positively associated with improved health outcomes for this population.
  2. Specialized training in geriatric emergency care improves the management of elderly patients in emergency settings.
  3. Enhanced communication strategies between emergency nurses and elderly patients improve the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on emergency nursing approaches to elderly patients at Yobe State Specialist Hospital. Limitations may include challenges in recruiting elderly patients who are able to provide feedback, potential biases in nurse self-reports, and difficulty generalizing findings due to the specific context of the hospital.

Definitions of Terms

  • Elderly patients: Individuals aged 65 and older, who often have unique healthcare needs due to aging-related health conditions.
  • Emergency nursing approach: The strategies, techniques, and interventions used by emergency nurses to assess and care for patients in emergency situations.
  • Geriatric care: Healthcare services specifically designed for the elderly population, addressing their unique medical, psychological, and social needs.
