Background of the Study

Infertility is a condition that affects millions of women globally and can have profound psychological and emotional consequences. The inability to conceive can lead to feelings of inadequacy, depression, anxiety, and social stigma. Women experiencing infertility often face societal pressures and personal distress, as reproductive success is commonly viewed as a major life milestone (Chang et al., 2023). While medical and technological advancements have improved fertility treatment options, the psychological burden of infertility remains a significant issue.

University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, is a prominent healthcare facility offering fertility services to women experiencing infertility. However, the psychological impact of infertility on women seeking treatment at UCH remains understudied. This study aims to assess the psychological impact of infertility on women undergoing treatment at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and to explore the emotional, mental, and social challenges they face.

Statement of the Problem

Infertility can have a severe psychological impact on women, leading to feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Despite the availability of fertility treatments at institutions like UCH, there is limited research addressing the psychological effects of infertility on Nigerian women. The stigma surrounding infertility in Nigerian society often exacerbates these emotional challenges, and understanding the psychological experiences of women dealing with infertility can help improve healthcare practices and provide better psychological support. This study will assess the psychological impact of infertility on women at University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the psychological impact of infertility on women undergoing fertility treatment at University College Hospital, Ibadan.
  2. To explore the emotional and social challenges faced by women experiencing infertility.
  3. To recommend psychological interventions and support mechanisms for women dealing with infertility.

Research Questions

  1. What is the psychological impact of infertility on women undergoing fertility treatment at University College Hospital, Ibadan?
  2. What emotional and social challenges do women with infertility face?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to provide psychological support for women dealing with infertility?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Women undergoing fertility treatment experience significant psychological distress due to infertility.
  2. Women with infertility face higher levels of anxiety, depression, and social stigma compared to those without infertility.
  3. Psychological support interventions will reduce the mental health burden associated with infertility.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on women undergoing fertility treatment at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and assess the psychological impact of infertility on their emotional and mental health. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported emotional distress, as participants may understate or overstate their experiences due to social pressures. Additionally, the study is limited to one hospital, which may not be representative of all Nigerian healthcare settings.
