Background of the Study

Psychiatric home-based care (PHBC) is an alternative model of mental health care delivery that involves providing treatment and support to patients in their homes rather than in institutional settings. Home-based care has become increasingly popular due to its potential benefits in improving patients’ comfort, reducing the stigma associated with psychiatric hospitalization, and promoting better patient engagement. This model has shown promise in managing chronic psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and depression, particularly in developed countries. However, the effectiveness of home-based care in the Nigerian context remains insufficiently studied.

At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, a pioneering institution in providing mental health care services, psychiatric home-based care has been implemented for certain patients. Despite the widespread use of this model, there is a lack of systematic evaluation regarding its impact on patient outcomes in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of psychiatric home-based care in improving patient outcomes such as symptom reduction, quality of life, and social functioning among patients under care at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

While psychiatric home-based care has been proposed as an effective model of treatment for patients with psychiatric disorders, there is limited research on its effectiveness within the Nigerian healthcare system. At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, the use of home-based care for psychiatric patients has been implemented, but there is a need for evidence-based evaluation of its impact on patient outcomes. This study will evaluate how home-based care influences patient recovery and quality of life in order to inform future mental health care practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of psychiatric home-based care in improving the outcomes of patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To assess the impact of home-based care on the symptom reduction, quality of life, and social functioning of patients.
  3. To explore the challenges and limitations of implementing psychiatric home-based care in Nigeria.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is psychiatric home-based care in improving patient outcomes at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. What impact does home-based care have on patients’ symptom reduction, quality of life, and social functioning?
  3. What challenges are encountered in the implementation of psychiatric home-based care in the Nigerian healthcare setting?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Psychiatric home-based care improves patient outcomes, including symptom reduction and quality of life.
  2. Home-based care significantly enhances patients' social functioning and social integration.
  3. Implementation of psychiatric home-based care faces specific challenges related to resources, training, and support services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on patients receiving psychiatric home-based care at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and evaluates the impact of this model on their mental health outcomes. Limitations include the potential for bias in patient-reported data and the lack of a control group for comparison. Additionally, challenges such as resource limitations and the diversity of patient needs may impact the generalizability of the findings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Patient outcomes: The results of care and treatment on a patient’s symptoms, functioning, and overall well-being.
  • Social functioning: An individual’s ability to perform daily tasks and engage in social activities.
