Background of the Study

Psychiatric rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of mental healthcare, particularly in helping individuals with severe mental health conditions reintegrate into society and lead fulfilling lives. Peer support programs have emerged as a valuable strategy in psychiatric rehabilitation, offering individuals the opportunity to receive support from others who have experienced similar challenges. These programs provide emotional support, promote recovery through shared experiences, and facilitate social integration. In Nigeria, psychiatric rehabilitation is still evolving, and although peer support programs have gained attention globally, their effectiveness in Nigerian settings remains largely underexplored.

At the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina State, the application of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation has been an integral component of the treatment model for patients with various mental health conditions. However, while anecdotal evidence suggests that peer support might be beneficial in improving outcomes for patients, there is limited empirical research on the effectiveness of these programs in the Nigerian context. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation, focusing on their impact on patient recovery, coping skills, and social reintegration at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing recognition of the benefits of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation, there is limited research on their effectiveness within Nigerian psychiatric settings. At the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, patients in psychiatric rehabilitation programs may benefit from peer support, but the specific impacts of such programs on their recovery have not been sufficiently studied. The absence of systematic evaluation of peer support initiatives in this context hinders the development of evidence-based practices to optimize mental health rehabilitation. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the effectiveness of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of peer support programs in improving recovery outcomes for psychiatric patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
  2. To assess the impact of peer support programs on the patients' coping strategies, self-esteem, and social reintegration.
  3. To explore the challenges faced in implementing peer support programs in the psychiatric rehabilitation process at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are peer support programs in enhancing recovery outcomes for psychiatric patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
  2. What impact do peer support programs have on patients' coping strategies, self-esteem, and social reintegration?
  3. What challenges are encountered in the implementation of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Peer support programs significantly improve recovery outcomes for psychiatric patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
  2. Peer support programs enhance patients' coping strategies, self-esteem, and social reintegration.
  3. Implementation of peer support programs in psychiatric rehabilitation faces specific challenges related to resources and training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on patients undergoing psychiatric rehabilitation at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, and evaluates the role of peer support programs in enhancing recovery outcomes. Limitations include the potential bias of self-reported data from participants and the absence of a longitudinal component to assess long-term impacts of peer support. The study is also restricted to one institution, and findings may not be generalizable to other healthcare settings.
