Background of the Study
Social isolation is a growing concern in societies around the world, particularly among the elderly population. The elderly are at an increased risk of experiencing social isolation due to factors such as reduced mobility, loss of family members and friends, chronic illness, and retirement (Kaur et al., 2023). Social isolation can significantly impact the mental and physical health of older adults, leading to increased vulnerability to depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and other mental health disorders (Hernandez & Brown, 2024).
In Nigeria, the rapid urbanization and migration patterns have contributed to a sense of isolation for many elderly individuals, as younger family members move away for better opportunities in urban centers. This trend is particularly evident in rural and semi-urban areas, where access to social support networks is limited (Okafor et al., 2023). Elderly individuals in such settings often lack the resources to actively engage with their communities, leading to feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, and a reduced quality of life.
Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, in Imo State, serves as a prominent healthcare facility for elderly patients in the region. This study aims to examine the impact of social isolation on the mental health of the elderly, specifically those receiving care at this facility. Understanding how social isolation affects elderly mental health in a Nigerian context will inform future interventions and support systems for this vulnerable population.
Statement of the Problem
The mental health of the elderly in Nigeria is often overlooked, despite the rising number of elderly individuals experiencing social isolation. The direct impact of social isolation on the mental health of elderly patients in healthcare facilities such as Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, has not been sufficiently studied. Given the significance of social engagement in mitigating mental health risks, it is essential to understand how isolation exacerbates mental health issues in the elderly and to explore potential interventions to address this concern.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 and above who are receiving care at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, between 2023 and 2025. The limitations include the potential difficulty in accurately measuring the extent of social isolation and the influence of other factors such as physical health conditions and socio-economic status.
