Background of the Study
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges with social communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. Early intervention is critical in improving the quality of life for individuals with ASD, and family-based interventions have been identified as a key strategy for promoting positive outcomes (Williams et al., 2023). Family-based interventions involve educating and training family members to support their loved ones with ASD, helping them develop social, communication, and behavioral skills.
In Nigeria, however, autism is often misunderstood, and many families may not have access to specialized resources. In Akwa Ibom State, the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Uyo plays an important role in providing care for individuals with ASD. However, the implementation and effectiveness of family-based interventions in this setting have not been extensively researched. This study aims to investigate how family involvement in the management of ASD can contribute to better outcomes for patients.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of family-based interventions in managing ASD, these strategies have not been adequately implemented or researched in Nigerian clinical settings, especially in the context of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo. Without comprehensive understanding, many families remain unaware of the positive role they can play in their child's therapeutic journey. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of family-based interventions for managing ASD in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families receiving care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo, between 2023 and 2025. The limitations of the study include potential biases from families’ perceptions of the interventions and challenges in isolating the impact of family-based interventions from other therapeutic modalities.
