Background of the Study
Election observers play a crucial role in enhancing the transparency and credibility of electoral processes. They monitor election activities to ensure that elections are conducted in accordance with legal and procedural standards, providing an independent assessment of the integrity of the process (Umar & Bello, 2024). In Makurdi Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, election observers have been active in monitoring elections to ensure fairness and accountability in the face of challenges such as voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, and electoral fraud (Nwankwo & Olayemi, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the role of election observers in ensuring electoral transparency in Makurdi, focusing on how their activities influence the conduct of elections, the public perception of election credibility, and the enforcement of electoral laws. The research will also examine the challenges faced by election observers, including limited resources, threats to their security, and political interference.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While the presence of election observers is crucial for enhancing electoral transparency, their effectiveness in promoting free and fair elections in Makurdi LGA has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to assess how election observers contribute to electoral transparency in Makurdi and identify the challenges that hinder their ability to fully carry out their responsibilities.

It will also help inform policies on election monitoring and contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of election observers in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, particularly during the 2023 elections. The research will be limited to assessing the activities of local and international observers and their impact on electoral transparency. Limitations include potential biases in responses from election observers and difficulties in accessing sensitive information due to political sensitivities.
