Background of the Study
Women's participation in electoral processes is a key component of democratic consolidation, yet it remains a significant challenge in many parts of the world, particularly in African nations like Nigeria. In the case of Keffi Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State, despite legal frameworks designed to promote gender equality and women’s inclusion in political processes, women remain underrepresented in terms of both voter participation and candidacy (Yusuf & Ojo, 2024). While there has been progress in recent years through various advocacy and policy initiatives aimed at empowering women politically, cultural, socio-economic, and structural barriers still persist, limiting the full participation of women in elections (Danladi & Abubakar, 2023). These barriers often manifest in the form of patriarchal norms, lack of access to political information, economic disenfranchisement, and low levels of education and political awareness among women (Nuhu & Ibrahim, 2023). The study aims to evaluate the factors affecting women’s participation in the electoral processes of Keffi LGA, exploring both the challenges and opportunities available for enhancing women’s political involvement. By investigating how factors such as education, employment, and social networks influence women's political engagement, this research will offer insights into the effectiveness of existing policies in promoting women's participation in elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While women's participation in the electoral process is crucial for strengthening democracy, women in Keffi LGA continue to face significant challenges that hinder their full participation in elections. These challenges, including cultural restrictions, limited access to political networks, and economic factors, contribute to low voter turnout among women and underrepresentation in political offices. This study aims to assess the level of women’s participation in the electoral process in Keffi LGA and identify the barriers preventing them from engaging more actively in politics.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the level of women’s participation in the electoral process in Keffi Local Government Area.
To identify the socio-cultural and economic factors that affect women’s participation in elections.
To examine the effectiveness of government and civil society initiatives in promoting women’s participation in the electoral process in Keffi.
1.4 Research Questions
What is the level of women’s participation in the electoral process in Keffi Local Government Area?
What socio-cultural and economic factors limit women’s participation in elections in Keffi LGA?
How effective are the policies and initiatives aimed at promoting women’s political participation in Keffi?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Socio-cultural factors have a significant negative impact on women’s participation in elections in Keffi LGA.
Economic factors limit the level of women’s participation in electoral processes in Keffi LGA.
Government and civil society initiatives significantly enhance women’s participation in electoral processes in Keffi.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of gender dynamics in Nigerian electoral politics, particularly in the context of Keffi LGA. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, political parties, and civil society organizations working to promote women’s participation in politics. By identifying barriers to women’s electoral engagement, this research will help in designing more effective policies and interventions to empower women politically and improve gender representation in the Nigerian political system.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Keffi Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, specifically investigating women's participation in elections, including voting behavior, candidacy, and engagement in political activities. The research will be limited to women who are registered voters in the area. Limitations of the study include potential biases in responses from participants, particularly those who may be reluctant to discuss socio-cultural challenges.
