Background of the Study
The role of social media in shaping public awareness and engagement in political processes has grown significantly in recent years, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram have become essential tools for disseminating political information, mobilizing voters, and influencing electoral behavior (Oluwole & Ibrahim, 2024). In Dambatta Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, social media has become an important medium for reaching voters, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where access to traditional forms of media may be limited (Abdullahi & Salihu, 2023). With the rise of internet penetration and mobile phone usage in Nigeria, social media platforms have provided a space for political campaigns, voter education, and the spreading of electoral news, enabling individuals to make more informed decisions during elections. Social media serves as a double-edged sword, both educating voters and sometimes contributing to misinformation and political polarization (Dutse & Mohammed, 2024). Despite the vast potential of social media for voter awareness, challenges such as digital illiteracy, online disinformation, and unequal access to technology remain persistent in rural and semi-urban areas like Dambatta. This study aims to investigate the extent to which social media impacts voter awareness in Dambatta LGA, focusing on how it influences voters' understanding of electoral processes, candidate policies, and the importance of participating in elections. Additionally, it will explore the challenges of leveraging social media for political awareness in this region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has shown to be an effective tool for increasing voter awareness globally, its impact in rural and semi-urban regions such as Dambatta LGA remains underexplored. Despite the increasing reliance on social media in Nigerian electoral campaigns, it is unclear how well it informs voters in Dambatta about critical electoral issues, voting procedures, and candidate platforms. Given the challenges of internet connectivity, digital literacy, and political misinformation, it is important to assess how these factors influence social media’s effectiveness in enhancing voter awareness in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of social media on voter awareness in Dambatta Local Government Area.

  2. To assess the extent to which social media informs voters about election procedures, candidates, and political issues.

  3. To identify the challenges associated with using social media to enhance voter awareness in Dambatta LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media impact voter awareness in Dambatta Local Government Area?

  2. To what extent does social media provide voters with useful information on election processes and candidates?

  3. What challenges limit the effectiveness of social media in voter awareness campaigns in Dambatta LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Social media has a positive and significant impact on voter awareness in Dambatta LGA.

  2. There is a significant relationship between the level of social media engagement and voter understanding of electoral procedures in Dambatta LGA.

  3. Challenges such as digital illiteracy and misinformation limit the effectiveness of social media in enhancing voter awareness in Dambatta LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding the role of social media in enhancing voter awareness, especially in rural and semi-urban Nigerian contexts like Dambatta. By examining how social media impacts voter education, this research will offer valuable insights for political parties, electoral bodies, and civil society organizations on how to leverage social media effectively for electoral campaigns and voter engagement. Additionally, the findings will inform strategies to address digital divides and online misinformation that may hinder the potential of social media in democratic processes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Dambatta Local Government Area in Kano State, specifically investigating the role of social media in promoting voter awareness during elections. The study is limited to voters in Dambatta who use social media platforms and does not include non-users or those in nearby areas outside the local government. A limitation of the study includes the potential bias in self-reported data from participants, as some individuals may overestimate their use of social media for political purposes.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Social Media: Online platforms that enable users to create, share, and exchange content, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

  • Voter Awareness: The knowledge and understanding of electoral processes, candidates, and political issues that enable voters to make informed decisions.

  • Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively and critically use digital tools and platforms, such as social media, for communication and information processing.
