Background of the Study
Ethnic identity is a powerful determinant of voting behavior in many African countries, including Nigeria. The influence of ethnicity on political decision-making is particularly pronounced in areas with significant ethnic diversity, such as Gboko Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State. In Nigeria, ethnic identity often shapes political alliances, voting preferences, and the support of candidates during elections (Katsina & Terkula, 2024). In Gboko, a region with a diverse mix of ethnic groups, the role of ethnic identity in electoral choices is especially notable, with voters often influenced by their ethnic affiliations when selecting candidates (Adu & Oka, 2025). Ethnicity serves as both a mobilizing and divisive force, as political parties and candidates frequently align themselves with specific ethnic groups to garner support. The political landscape in Gboko is deeply intertwined with ethnic interests, which can influence not only individual voting behavior but also broader patterns of political engagement (Ibrahim & Abubakar, 2023). This study seeks to examine how ethnic identity influences voting behavior in Gboko LGA, focusing on the factors that make ethnicity a central aspect of electoral politics in the area. Understanding the role of ethnicity in voting behavior will contribute to the broader discourse on ethnic politics in Nigeria, offering valuable insights into the impact of ethnic identity on democratic processes and election outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the prominence of ethnic identity in shaping political behavior, there is limited research on its specific influence on voting patterns in Gboko LGA. While ethnic affiliation is widely recognized as an important factor in Nigerian elections, the exact ways in which it affects voting behavior in Gboko have not been thoroughly examined (Agbo & Tserem, 2023). Understanding how ethnicity shapes voting choices in this region is crucial for developing strategies to promote inclusivity and reduce the potential for ethnic-based conflicts in the electoral process.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of ethnic identity in shaping voting behavior in Gboko Local Government Area.

  2. To assess the impact of ethnic-based political alignments on electoral outcomes in Gboko LGA.

  3. To explore the potential for ethnic identity to foster divisiveness or unity in the voting process in Gboko LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does ethnic identity influence voting behavior in Gboko Local Government Area?

  2. How do ethnic-based political alignments impact electoral outcomes in Gboko LGA?

  3. To what extent does ethnic identity contribute to unity or divisiveness during elections in Gboko LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Ethnic identity has a significant impact on voting behavior in Gboko LGA.

  2. Ethnic-based political alignments influence electoral outcomes in Gboko LGA.

  3. Ethnic identity either fosters political unity or exacerbates divisiveness in Gboko LGA elections.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into how ethnic identity influences voting behavior in Gboko, contributing to a better understanding of ethnic dynamics in Nigerian politics. The findings will be relevant for political parties, candidates, and policymakers, as they seek to navigate the complexities of ethnic politics and build more inclusive electoral strategies. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader academic discourse on ethnicity and politics in Africa, providing a model for examining ethnic identity in other diverse regions of Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is focused on Gboko Local Government Area in Benue State, with particular attention to the influence of ethnic identity on voting behavior. The research will be limited to registered voters in the area and does not include individuals from outside the ethnic groups involved in the study. A limitation of the study includes the potential for bias in participants’ responses, as ethnic identity is a sensitive subject that may affect the accuracy of the data.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Ethnic Identity: The sense of belonging to a particular ethnic group, often influencing social, political, and cultural behavior.

  • Voting Behavior: The actions or decisions made by individuals when casting their votes during elections.

  • Ethnic-Based Political Alignments: Political alliances formed along ethnic lines, often used to mobilize support during elections.
