Background of the Study

Chronic pain is a common issue among elderly patients, often resulting from conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, or back problems. One of the most significant impacts of chronic pain is its effect on sleep, as persistent discomfort can make it difficult for individuals to fall asleep, stay asleep, or achieve restful sleep. Sleep disturbances, in turn, contribute to worsened pain perception, mood disorders, and a reduced quality of life. Research suggests that addressing pain may improve sleep quality and vice versa (Muhammad & Fadimah, 2023). This study will examine the relationship between chronic pain and sleep disturbances in elderly patients in Taraba State, aiming to understand how these two factors interact and impact overall health.

Statement of the Problem

Elderly patients in Taraba State often experience chronic pain, leading to disrupted sleep patterns and further exacerbating their pain and health issues. Despite the known relationship between pain and sleep disturbances, few studies have explored how these two factors are interconnected in the elderly population of Taraba State. This study seeks to identify the extent of chronic pain-related sleep disturbances and explore strategies to manage both issues simultaneously.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of chronic pain and sleep disturbances among elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of chronic pain on the quality of sleep in elderly patients.

  3. To recommend interventions for managing chronic pain and sleep disturbances in elderly patients in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of chronic pain and sleep disturbances among elderly patients in Taraba State?

  2. How does chronic pain affect the sleep quality of elderly patients?

  3. What strategies can be used to manage both chronic pain and sleep disturbances in elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Chronic pain is significantly correlated with sleep disturbances in elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. Elderly patients with chronic pain report lower quality of sleep and higher levels of fatigue.

  3. Addressing chronic pain leads to improvements in sleep quality among elderly patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients in Taraba State suffering from chronic pain and sleep disturbances. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting of pain and sleep quality, as well as difficulties in accessing elderly patients in rural areas.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Pain: Persistent pain lasting for more than three months, often associated with aging or long-term conditions.

  • Sleep Disturbances: Any disruption in the sleep cycle, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or poor sleep quality.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years or older.
