Background of the Study

Polypharmacy, or the use of multiple medications by an individual, is common among elderly patients, particularly those with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis. While polypharmacy is often necessary for managing multiple health issues, it can also lead to adverse outcomes such as medication interactions, non-adherence, and increased risk of side effects (Abubakar & Sulaimon, 2023). In Katsina State, where many elderly individuals suffer from chronic conditions, the impact of polypharmacy on their overall health is a growing concern. This study aims to explore the relationship between polypharmacy and health outcomes in elderly patients, highlighting potential risks and suggesting solutions for more effective medication management.

Statement of the Problem

The use of multiple medications among elderly patients in Katsina State may be contributing to negative health outcomes such as increased hospitalizations, medication-related complications, and reduced quality of life. Despite the growing concern about polypharmacy in this population, there is limited research on its impact in the region. This study will investigate the consequences of polypharmacy on the health of elderly patients in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of polypharmacy among elderly patients in Katsina State.

  2. To examine the impact of polypharmacy on health outcomes such as adverse drug reactions, medication adherence, and hospitalizations.

  3. To propose strategies for improving medication management among elderly patients to reduce the risks associated with polypharmacy.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of polypharmacy among elderly patients in Katsina State?

  2. What are the health outcomes associated with polypharmacy in elderly patients in Katsina State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve medication management and reduce the risks of polypharmacy?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Polypharmacy is significantly associated with an increased risk of adverse drug reactions among elderly patients in Katsina State.

  2. Elderly patients who use multiple medications are more likely to experience poor medication adherence and increased hospitalizations.

  3. Interventions aimed at improving medication management will reduce the negative health outcomes associated with polypharmacy.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients in Katsina State who are taking multiple medications for chronic conditions. Limitations include the accuracy of self-reported medication use and potential confounding factors such as the complexity of patients’ medical conditions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Polypharmacy: The use of five or more medications concurrently, typically seen in elderly patients with multiple chronic conditions.

  • Medication Adherence: The degree to which a patient correctly follows prescribed medication regimens.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years and older.
