Background of the Study

Treatment adherence is crucial for managing chronic diseases, especially in elderly patients who often deal with multiple comorbidities. Family engagement plays a significant role in influencing elderly patients’ adherence to prescribed treatments, as family members are typically involved in caregiving and decision-making. In Kwara State, where family structures are often close-knit and support systems are vital, the involvement of family members in healthcare decisions can impact the treatment outcomes of elderly patients. Studies have shown that family support can improve medication adherence, dietary adherence, and overall management of chronic conditions (Gambo & Musa, 2023). However, there is a lack of empirical research in Kwara State on how family engagement influences elderly patients’ adherence to treatment protocols. This study seeks to explore the role of family engagement in treatment adherence and how it can be optimized to improve health outcomes for elderly individuals.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of family support, many elderly patients in Kwara State struggle with treatment adherence, particularly for managing chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis. The absence of consistent family involvement in the healthcare process may contribute to poor adherence to treatment regimens, leading to worsened health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the extent to which family engagement influences treatment adherence among elderly patients in Kwara State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of family involvement in the treatment of elderly patients in Kwara State.

  2. To assess the relationship between family engagement and treatment adherence in elderly patients.

  3. To provide recommendations for improving family involvement to enhance treatment adherence among elderly patients in Kwara State.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are family members involved in the treatment of elderly patients in Kwara State?

  2. How does family engagement influence treatment adherence among elderly patients in Kwara State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve family engagement in the treatment of elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of family engagement are associated with better treatment adherence among elderly patients in Kwara State.

  2. Elderly patients with active family support have improved health outcomes compared to those with limited family involvement.

  3. Interventions designed to increase family engagement will lead to improved treatment adherence in elderly patients in Kwara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients residing in Kwara State, with particular attention to those with chronic diseases who rely on family support for treatment adherence. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reported data from family members and patients, as well as challenges in measuring the direct impact of family engagement on adherence.

Definitions of Terms

  • Family Engagement: The active involvement of family members in the healthcare decisions, treatment planning, and caregiving of elderly patients.

  • Treatment Adherence: The extent to which a patient follows prescribed medical advice, including taking medications, attending follow-up appointments, and adhering to lifestyle changes.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years and older.
