Background of the Study

The emotional well-being of elderly patients is profoundly influenced by the attitudes of their caregivers. Positive caregiver attitudes, such as empathy, compassion, and patience, have been shown to enhance the emotional health of elderly individuals, reducing feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. In contrast, negative caregiver attitudes, such as neglect, frustration, and hostility, can exacerbate emotional distress and lead to worsening mental health among elderly patients (Aminu & Rukayya, 2023). In Benue State, where elderly care often falls on family members, caregivers’ attitudes may be influenced by factors such as stress, financial strain, and lack of training. This study aims to investigate the influence of caregiver attitudes on the emotional well-being of elderly individuals in Benue State and identify strategies to improve caregiving practices.

Statement of the Problem

Many elderly individuals in Benue State experience emotional distress due to poor caregiving practices. Negative attitudes from caregivers, such as impatience, lack of empathy, or neglect, can significantly impact the mental health of elderly individuals. This study will explore the connection between caregiver attitudes and the emotional well-being of elderly individuals, with a focus on how negative caregiving behaviors contribute to mental health issues.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the impact of caregiver attitudes on the emotional well-being of elderly patients in Benue State.

  2. To assess the prevalence of positive and negative caregiver attitudes in Benue State.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving caregiver attitudes to enhance the emotional well-being of elderly individuals.

Research Questions

  1. How do caregiver attitudes influence the emotional well-being of elderly individuals in Benue State?

  2. What are the common positive and negative caregiver attitudes in Benue State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve caregiver attitudes toward elderly individuals in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Negative caregiver attitudes are associated with poor emotional well-being in elderly individuals in Benue State.

  2. Elderly individuals who receive care from empathetic and supportive caregivers have better emotional well-being.

  3. Interventions aimed at improving caregiver attitudes will enhance the emotional health of elderly individuals in Benue State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals receiving care from family members or other informal caregivers in Benue State. Limitations include the subjective nature of measuring caregiver attitudes and the emotional well-being of elderly patients, as well as potential cultural influences on caregiving practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Caregiver Attitudes: The behaviors, emotional responses, and interpersonal interactions displayed by caregivers towards elderly patients.

  • Emotional Well-being: A state of mental health characterized by positive feelings, psychological stability, and resilience in the face of stressors.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years and older, often requiring additional support for physical and emotional well-being.
