Background of the Study

Cognitive decline in elderly individuals is a growing concern worldwide, including in Taraba State. With the increasing number of elderly individuals in the state, the need to understand the factors contributing to cognitive decline is critical. One such factor is nutrition, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining cognitive function. Malnutrition, both undernutrition and overnutrition, has been shown to impact cognitive health, leading to conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's disease (Smith et al., 2023). Elderly individuals in Taraba State often face challenges related to inadequate access to nutritious food, cultural dietary preferences, and economic constraints, which can influence their nutritional intake. The relationship between nutrition and cognitive decline in this population has not been adequately studied, making this investigation necessary to inform local healthcare strategies and interventions.

Statement of the Problem

In Taraba State, there is limited understanding of how nutrition affects cognitive health among elderly residents. Poor dietary habits, lack of awareness about nutrition, and inadequate access to nutritional support services may be contributing to cognitive decline in the elderly population. This study aims to explore the relationship between nutrition and cognitive decline among elderly individuals in Taraba State to identify key areas that could help improve cognitive health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the nutritional status of elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  2. To investigate the relationship between dietary intake and cognitive decline in elderly individuals.

  3. To recommend interventions aimed at improving nutrition to mitigate cognitive decline in the elderly population of Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the nutritional status of elderly individuals in Taraba State?

  2. How does dietary intake relate to cognitive decline among elderly individuals in Taraba State?

  3. What interventions can be implemented to improve nutrition and reduce cognitive decline among the elderly in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between poor nutrition and cognitive decline among elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  2. Improved nutrition will lead to a reduction in cognitive decline among elderly individuals in Taraba State.

  3. Elderly individuals with balanced diets will show better cognitive function compared to those with poor dietary habits.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals aged 65 and older residing in both urban and rural areas of Taraba State. Limitations may include challenges in assessing dietary intake accurately and the inability to control all environmental factors affecting cognitive decline.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nutrition: The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth, specifically focusing on the balance of nutrients in the diet.

  • Cognitive Decline: A deterioration in memory, thinking, language, and decision-making abilities that interferes with daily life.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years and older who are experiencing the natural process of aging.
