Background of the Study
Depression is a common and often underdiagnosed mental health issue among the elderly. In Borno State, where mental health services are often limited, group therapy has emerged as a potential intervention to address the psychological well-being of older adults (Bello et al., 2023). Group therapy, which involves guided interactions with peers experiencing similar challenges, can provide a sense of belonging, reduce isolation, and promote emotional support, all of which are crucial for managing depression in older adults.
While group therapy has shown promise in other regions, its specific impact on elderly depression in Borno State has not been thoroughly studied. This research aims to appraise the effectiveness of group therapy in reducing depression among the elderly in Borno State, considering factors such as patient outcomes, social engagement, and overall mental health improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Depression among the elderly in Borno State is often exacerbated by social isolation, loss of family support, and the psychological effects of conflict in the region. While group therapy has the potential to reduce these factors, there is limited research on its effectiveness for elderly individuals in Borno State. This study will evaluate whether group therapy can effectively reduce depression and enhance the mental health of older adults in the region.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of group therapy in reducing depression among elderly individuals in Borno State.
To determine the impact of group therapy on the social well-being and engagement of elderly patients in Borno State.
To identify the challenges in implementing group therapy for elderly individuals and suggest improvements for future interventions.
Research Questions
How effective is group therapy in reducing symptoms of depression among elderly individuals in Borno State?
What impact does group therapy have on the social engagement and well-being of elderly individuals in Borno State?
What challenges exist in implementing group therapy for elderly individuals in Borno State, and how can these challenges be overcome?
Research Hypotheses
Group therapy significantly reduces symptoms of depression among elderly individuals in Borno State.
Group therapy enhances the social engagement and overall well-being of elderly participants in Borno State.
Barriers such as stigma, lack of trained facilitators, and limited access to group therapy programs reduce the effectiveness of group therapy for elderly patients in Borno State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly individuals participating in group therapy sessions in both urban and rural areas of Borno State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported depression symptoms and the challenge of measuring the long-term effects of group therapy on depression.
