Background of the Study

Sleep disorders are a common problem among the elderly, impacting their overall health and quality of life. Conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome are prevalent in aging populations and are often linked to other health issues like depression, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive decline (Sulaimon et al., 2023). In Kebbi State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, the aging population is growing, and the recognition of sleep disorders in elderly individuals remains underexplored.

Effective management of sleep disorders is essential to improve the well-being of older adults. However, elderly individuals often face barriers to receiving appropriate diagnosis and treatment, such as limited healthcare access, lack of awareness, and inadequate training of healthcare providers (Ojo et al., 2024). This study aims to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State and evaluate the methods used to manage these disorders.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing number of elderly individuals in Kebbi State, the management of sleep disorders remains a significant challenge. The lack of awareness among the elderly and healthcare providers about sleep disorders, coupled with limited access to healthcare services, can lead to untreated or poorly managed conditions that worsen the health and quality of life of elderly patients. This study seeks to explore how sleep disorders are diagnosed and managed among the elderly in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  2. To evaluate the management strategies used for sleep disorders in elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State?

  2. How are sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State managed?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the management of sleep disorders among elderly individuals in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sleep disorders are prevalent among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  2. Elderly individuals in Kebbi State have limited access to appropriate healthcare resources for managing sleep disorders.

  3. Improving healthcare training and access to sleep disorder management can enhance the quality of sleep and health among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on elderly individuals residing in both rural and urban areas of Kebbi State. Limitations include potential bias in self-reporting of sleep disturbances and challenges in accessing healthcare facilities in remote areas.

Definitions of Terms
