Background of the Study
Community health nurses (CHNs) are pivotal in delivering primary healthcare services, particularly in underserved and rural areas. In Sokoto State, where healthcare resources may be limited, CHNs serve as primary healthcare providers for the elderly population, offering preventive care, health education, and management of chronic conditions (Aliyu et al., 2023). Given the increasing aging population in Sokoto, the role of community health nurses in elderly care has become even more critical. Elderly patients often face a variety of health challenges, including chronic diseases, physical disabilities, and mental health issues, requiring specialized care. The involvement of CHNs can significantly enhance the accessibility of healthcare services, offering timely interventions and improving the quality of life for elderly individuals (Garba et al., 2024).
In Sokoto State, where rural and urban disparities in healthcare access exist, CHNs are essential in providing care to elderly patients who may not have regular access to hospital-based services. However, the extent of their roles, the challenges they face, and their training and preparedness for elderly care in Sokoto State remain understudied. This study seeks to assess the role of community health nurses in elderly care, focusing on their responsibilities, services provided, and the support needed for more effective caregiving.
Statement of the Problem
Although community health nurses are integral to elderly care in Sokoto State, there is limited research on their roles and the challenges they face in providing care to elderly individuals. Many elderly patients, particularly in rural areas, suffer from health conditions that require continuous monitoring and specialized care. The effectiveness of community health nurses in managing these conditions may be hindered by challenges such as insufficient training, limited resources, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of community health nurses in elderly care in Sokoto State.
To identify the challenges faced by community health nurses in providing care to elderly patients.
To determine the training and resources required by community health nurses to improve elderly care in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
What role do community health nurses play in elderly care in Sokoto State?
What challenges do community health nurses face in providing care to elderly patients in Sokoto State?
What training and resources are required by community health nurses to improve their care for elderly individuals?
Research Hypotheses
Community health nurses in Sokoto State are actively involved in the management of elderly care.
Insufficient training, lack of resources, and inadequate support are significant challenges for community health nurses in providing elderly care.
Providing additional training and resources for community health nurses improves the quality of elderly care in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on community health nurses working in Sokoto State, particularly in rural areas. Limitations may include challenges in accessing rural areas, variability in nurse training and healthcare delivery, and potential participant bias.
