Background of the Study

Dementia, a progressive cognitive decline, is one of the most challenging health conditions affecting the elderly globally, including in Nigeria (Ahmad et al., 2023). In Taraba State, where the elderly population is growing, dementia poses significant healthcare challenges due to the lack of specialized care and trained nursing staff (Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). Dementia care nursing focuses on providing tailored interventions to help manage the symptoms of dementia and improve the quality of life for patients, including cognitive stimulation, emotional support, and behavioral interventions (Jibril et al., 2023).

While research has shown that dementia care nursing can improve cognitive function and overall well-being in elderly patients, there is limited evidence on its impact specifically within the context of Taraba State (Abubakar & Mohammed, 2023). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of dementia care nursing in improving the cognitive function of elderly patients in Taraba State and determine the factors that influence its success.

Statement of the Problem

Dementia among elderly patients is increasingly common in Taraba State, yet there is limited access to specialized dementia care nursing. Given the progressive nature of dementia, appropriate nursing care is crucial for slowing the decline in cognitive function and improving the quality of life for affected individuals. This study seeks to explore the impact of dementia care nursing on the cognitive function of elderly patients in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of dementia care nursing on the cognitive function of elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. To identify the key nursing interventions that contribute to improved cognitive function in elderly patients with dementia.

  3. To examine the challenges and barriers to effective dementia care nursing in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. How does dementia care nursing impact the cognitive function of elderly patients in Taraba State?

  2. What specific nursing interventions contribute to improved cognitive function in elderly patients with dementia?

  3. What are the barriers to providing effective dementia care nursing in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Dementia care nursing significantly improves the cognitive function of elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. Elderly patients receiving dementia care nursing show a slower rate of cognitive decline compared to those who do not receive specialized care.

  3. Barriers such as insufficient training of healthcare professionals and lack of resources hinder the effectiveness of dementia care nursing in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients with dementia in Taraba State, evaluating the effectiveness of dementia care nursing in improving cognitive function. Data will be collected from both urban and rural healthcare facilities. Limitations include potential challenges in identifying and diagnosing dementia in rural areas and possible biases in patient-reported cognitive improvements.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cognitive Function: The mental processes involved in learning, memory, reasoning, and decision-making, which can be affected by conditions such as dementia.

  • Elderly Patients: Individuals aged 60 years and above, particularly those affected by age-related cognitive decline.
